How to Cut Bark From Poplar Trees

Poplar trees are deciduous trees the bark of which is used for a variety of projects including furniture building. The inner bark of the tree also has medicinal properties and is used as an herbal pain reliever. No matter what project you are using the poplar tree for, the first step is to cut off the outer bark. Cutting off the outer bark can be done any time of year but is best done in the spring.

  Wait until the spring or early summer and place a sharp knife against the bark of the tree. Position the blade of the knife so that it is perpendicular to the trunk.

  Cut straight into the trunk of the poplar tree approximately 1/2 inch.

  Angle the blade of the knife downward and cut down another 1/2 inch to 1 inch along the inside of the bark, thus creating a flap.

  Place your thumb on the flap of bark that is on top of the knife blade, while keeping the blade in place under the bark.

  Pull your hand out from the tree at a 45-degree angle. The bark will peel easily off the tree in a strip.

  Place the knife blade directly beside the starting location and cut into the tree by 1/2 inch to peel another piece of poplar bark off using the same method.
