How to Remodel a Closet Door

If you wish to change the look and feel to a room, remodel the closet door. You don't have to remodel the entire room to change the room's appearance. When considering how to remodel your closet door, take the rooms décor and decorating style into account--for example, if your room has red, black and white decorative colors, apply them to the closet door as well. Applying a coat of paint and changing the door handle changes the doors appearance, remodeling it.

      Remove the closet door handle. Unscrew the screw with your screwdriver holding the door handle together and remove the door handle.

      Wash both sides of the door with mild detergent, water and a rag. This removes dirt from the door creating a clean working surface.

      Paint one side of the closet door with your interior paint and paintbrush. Apply a second coat of paint if needed.

      Paint the opposite side of the closet door with your interior paint and paintbrush. Follow the manufacturer's directions for drying time and apply a second coat of paint if needed.

      Tape a stencil in the design of your choice to the top of your door facing the room. Paint inside the stencil cutouts with stencil paint and a stencil paintbrush. Remove tape and stencil and repeat for the entire width of the top of the door. Repeat for the opposite side of the door.

      Install a new door handle according to the manufacturer's directions. Typically, a side of the door handle goes on each side of the door and then secures to the door. Select a door handle in a different style or color than you previously had installed on the door--for example, if you had a gold door handle, select a stainless steel one.

      Install a door mirror according the manufacturer's directions. Take into account if you wish to look into the mirror while the closet door is opened or closed and install the mirror accordingly. Commonly, door mirrors secure to doors with clips and screws.
