Open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal cable from the battery. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels of the Camry with a lug wrench.
- 2
Use a floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle. Support the front of the vehicle with jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and slide the wheel off the hub.
- 3
Remove the caliper mounting bolts with a ratchet and socket. Slide the caliper off the rotor and use mechanic's wire to suspend the caliper from the fender or suspension component.
- 4
Remove the brake pads from the caliper and detach the retaining clips from the brake pads. Place one of the old brake pads over the caliper piston and use a C-clamp to push the piston inward.
- 5
Attach the retaining clips to the new brake pads and insert the brake pads into the caliper. Place the caliper over the rotor and tighten the caliper mounting bolts with a ratchet and socket.
- 6
Slide the wheel onto the hub and tighten the lug nuts by hand. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts, working in a "star" pattern to insure the nuts are evenly tightened.

How to Fix a 1991 Camry's Front Brakes
In most cars, the front brakes perform most of the work when braking, due to the sudden weight distribution to the front of the vehicle. This causes the front brakes to wear out earlier than the rear disc pads or drum shoes. Replacing the front brakes on the 1991 Toyota Camry when they show signs of wear is paramount to preserving the vehicle's stopping power. If the brake pads are not replaced in time, the pads can wear down to the metal, damaging the brake disc and rotor hardware.
