How to Install a Power Commander to F4i

Dynojet Research has engineered and sold aftermarket tuning hardware since 1972, starting with carburated bikes and moving to electronic fuel-injected engines. One of the first 600 cc sport bikes to incorporate the EFI system was Honda's CBR 600 F4i. Dynjojet introduced a compatible version of its Power Commander that allows the operator to smooth out the power curve of the bike and generate more horsepower. Installation of the Power Commander unit is not a difficult project, but some familiarity with the layout of the bike will make the process easier.

Remove the main seat by unscrewing the bolts at the rear. Slightly pull the seat back and up to release it from the latch where the gas tank and seat meet. Use the key to unlock the rear seat, remove it, and set it aside.

Place the Power Commander in the tail fairing storage compartment and run the wires through the tail and under the main seat. Do not use the supplied Velcro to hold the unit in place yet.

Remove the black left side inner fairing panel via the two bolts that surround the gauges which go to the fuel tank. Once it is out of the way, unplug the connector that is under the rubber flap and set it aside.

    • 4

Plug the connectors from the Power Commander in line with the wiring harness that you previously unplugged.

    • 5

Continue running the rest of the Power Commander wiring on the inside of the subframe toward the battery, which is under the main seat. Lifting the fuel tank up and out of the way will make things easier.

Find the negative terminal of the battery by lifting up the ECU, which sits directly on top of the battery, and the two pushpins that hold the battery cover in place. Gently set them aside without stretching or unplugging the wires. Once this is done, unscrew the negative terminal cable and attach the ground wire that runs from the Power Commander to the negative terminal. Re-tighten the terminal when finished.

Reinstall the battery cover and ECU by reversing the above steps. Lower and secure the gas tank and move to the rear of the bike. Thoroughly clean the Power Commander and the desired location for it on the bike with a rubbing alcohol swab. Place the Velcro on the unit and install it in the tail fairing.
