How to Repair the 2001 Chevy Astro Flasher

If the flasher lights on your 2001 Chevrolet Astro malfunction, they should be repaired immediately. Faulty flashers can lead to an accident or a citation from the police. The three most common reasons flashers fail are loose electrical connections, a popped fuse, and a burned-out bulb. All three can be fixed using just a screwdriver and a few minutes of work.

Turn off the Astro's engine. Open the hood. Put on gloves.

Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws at the inside edge of the turn-signal lamp assembly. Remove the lamp assembly from the vehicle. Tug on the electrical wire. If it comes loose, securely plug it into the rear of the assembly. If the flashers are still malfunctioning, the bulb might have to be replaced.

Squeeze the tab on the side of the smallest lamp socket while turning the socket counterclockwise. Pull the socket out of the assembly. Pull the old bulb out and replace it with a new 194-type bulb. Place the socket back into the assembly and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reattach the two screws. Close the hood. If the flashers still won't work, you may need to replace the flasher light fuse.

Open the driver's side door and remove the cover from the fuse panel, which is under the steering wheel. Locate the fuse puller and the spare fuses. The fuse labeled "1" is the hazard lamps fuse. Check to see if it is broken by inspecting the metal inside the fuse. If the metal is in one piece, the fuse is functional. If it is not, it will have to be replaced. Use the fuse puller to remove the broken fuse and replace it with a spare fuse from the cover. Make sure to use an identical 10-amp fuse. Place the cover on the fuse panel.
