How to Replace an EGR Valve on a 1993 F-150

The F-150 is a full-sized pickup truck manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The F-150 is equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation valve. The component directs the exhaust gasses through the intake manifold; the exhaust is then cooled and circulated through the engine. This entire process is important to your vehicle's efficiency, as it prevents the engine from overheating. Replace a damaged or failed EGR as soon as possible to ensure your F-150 continues to run smoothly and have good gas mileage.
    • 1

Park the F-150 on a level surface and leave the truck to cool for a half hour or until the components are cool enough to touch.

    • 2

Open the hood of the truck and locate the EGR valve. The valve is found near the firewall in the center of the engine. You will see a small hose coming from the valve to the exhaust system. The valve is a small, metal, circular valve.

    • 3

Loosen and remove the two bolts securing the valve into place using a socket wrench. There is a bolt on each side of the valve. Place the bolts in a safe spot as they are needed for the replacement valve.

    • 4

Remove the hose from the valve; the hose can just be pulled out and set to the side. Lift the EGR straight off of the mount. Force may be required if carbon has built up around the valve and on the mount.

    • 5

Place the new EGR on the valve mount. Align the holes on the EGR with the holes on the mount to ensure the bolts fit properly. Secure the bolts using the socket wrench. Plug the hose back into the EGR. Close the hood of the F-150.
