How to Safely Clean Deposits From Contact Lenses

Proper contact lens care is essential to prevent eye infections and maintain the lens quality. Everyday use allows protein deposits, bacteria and other debris such as makeup or lotion to contaminate the lenses. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, dirty lenses can cause corneal ulcers and infections, which develop quickly and might cause blindness. Clean your contact lenses after each use with a product recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

  Wash your hands with lotion-free soap, and dry them thoroughly on a lint-free towel.

  Place one contact lens in the palm of your hand, and rinse it with cleaning solution.

  Rub the lens gently with your finger for 20 seconds, or for the length of time specified on the solution bottle. Even if you use a no-rub solution, the FDA recommends rubbing the contacts to remove any buildup or protein deposits.

  Rinse the contact lens thoroughly with solution.

  Place the lens in a clean, empty case, and cover it with fresh solution. Repeat the cleaning process with the other contact lens.
