How to Use Glass As a Whiteboard

Whiteboards, also called markerboards and dry-erase boards, are typically made from melamine or plastic-coated cardboard. While inexpensive, they tend to scratch easily and stain from markers as they age, becoming less erasable over time. Glass is a durable material to use if you want to create your own whiteboard. Glass is abundant, easy to clean and can last many years with proper care.

Decide what kind of glass you'll use for your whiteboard. You can use an existing window, a mirror or a piece of cut glass mounted in a frame. Photo frames with glass fronts make excellent DIY glass whiteboards.

Remove the backing from the frame and set the glass aside. Use spray paint, a piece of colored paper or solid material as a background where the photo would be.

If using glass mounted within a frame, decide if you want to place the board in front of a solid-colored wall or if you want to place a backing behind the glass so the board can be read easily.

    • 4

Clean both sides of the glass using glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.

    • 5

Reassemble the photo frame, with the solid background facing the front of the glass.

Mount the frame on the wall and start writing notes on the glass using dry erase markers. Clean marker off the board using glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
