What Is an MSC Degree?

An M. Sc degree, or a Master's of Science degree, is the next level of education certification above a Bachelor's degree. Pursuing a Master's degree is done in graduate school. The abbreviation of M. Sc is much more common in Europe; in America, a Master's of Science is usually called an M.S.
  • Application

    • Application to an M. Sc program typically requires an undergraduate Bachelor's degree in a related field. However, schools sometimes make exceptions if an excellent academic record or relevant work experience apply.

    Requirements of an M. Sc

    • Graduation from an M. Sc program in Europe, where this subtitle is most common, requires between 60 and 120 credits, or one to two years. Occasionally, M. Sc programs can last three years, especially if semesters abroad or work in a field internship is required, such as in an anthropology program. These regulations have all been dictated by the Bologna Process, an agreement between European nations to follow one system of degree-granting.

    M. Sc Fields of Study

    • A Master's of Science degree typically applies to hard sciences, such as chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics. It also applies to natural sciences and other related sciences, such as anthropology, environmental studies, ecology, biology, and architecture. More rarely, an M. Sc is granted for studies in a social science.
