How to Use an iPod as a Bootable Disk for a PC

An iPod that connects to a computer as a bootable disk is recognized by the computer as a device with removable storage, not just an iPod. Placing the iPod into what is known as "Disk Use" mode gives you the ability to manage the player's contents using non-iTunes software, like Windows Media Player, or via the PC's "My Computer" application. Once this change is made, the iPod syncs with all PCs in "Disk Use" mode.

  Connect the iPod to its authorized computer (usually the computer first synced with that iPod) via the player's cord.

  Open iTunes on the computer.

  Under "Devices" in iTunes, click on "iPod" (or the name you've given the iPod).

  Click the "Summary" tab that's located in the center of iTunes.

  Click inside the box corresponding to "Enable Disk Use" or "Manually manage music and videos." A check mark appears inside the box that you click. Both options are located near the bottom of the iTunes program, and both turn on the "Disk Use" option for the iPod.

  Click "Sync." The iPod syncs as a bootable disk from now on.
