Inspiron 9400 Specifications

• The Inspiron 9400--also referred to as the E1705--is a laptop manufactured by Dell in 2005 and 2006. This model was originally shipped with Windows Media Center and could be purchased with an optional external TV tuner and remote. It is compatible with Windows 7 when upgraded to at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of memory. Weighing in at 7.5 lbs, this 17-inch multimedia laptop is considered a "desktop replacement" model that is not meant for frequent trips on the road.

Processors

• Processors offered with the 9400 include early Core Duo and Core Solo mobile processors, which run at either 533 megahertz (MHz) or 667 MHz bus speeds. Clock speeds for these processors ranged from around 1.8 gigahertz (GHz) to 2.1 GHz. When it first came out, Dell advertised this model as one of the first dual-core laptops.

Memory

• The maximum memory upgrade a user can perform on this laptop is 2 GB. Originally, this model shipped with either 256 MB, 512 MB or 1 GB of memory on two memory slots. Both slots are accessible through a back plate, making it easy for users to upgrade the memory themselves. The memory type is Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) laptop RAM.

Drives

• One hard drive up to 160 GB was included in the Inspiron 9400 when it shipped but users can upgrade the drive. The drive is removable by taking out two screws and sliding it out through one side of the laptop. Also included is a combo CD and DVD writer drive.

Display

• The Inspiron 9400 has a 17-inch widescreen display. The display types include WUXGA technology, for a 1920 by 1200 pixel native resolution, or WXGA+, for a 1440 by 900 pixel native resolution. Being a multimedia laptop, Dell offered a variety of graphic card options for this model, including the nVidia GeForce Go 7800, nVidia GeForce G 7900 GS or an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 with HyperMemory. The budget option for this machine is built-in Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. No matter which option the original buyer chose, the 9400 has 256 MB of graphics memory.

Networking

• There is support for an internal PCI-E wireless LAN Mini-Card for connecting to Wi-Fi networks. Some Inspiron 9400 laptops also include Bluetooth support. The built-in wired network adapter supports 10/100 Ethernet. Also built-in is one 56k modem.

Ports

• Many ports are built into this model to make it usable as a multimedia laptop. There are two audio jacks for attaching stereo speakers, a microphone jack, one S-video port for outputing to a television and both VGA and DVI-D ports for attaching an external monitor. Other ports are six USB, one IEEE 1394a 4-pin FireWire, an RJ-11 phone modem jack and an RJ-45 Ethernet jack.
