Is it Recommended to Paint House Siding?

Certain types of siding do not require paint as they are resistant to harsh weather elements. Other types benefit from a painted finish, because they are vulnerable to infestation and rot.

Vinyl and Fiber Cement

• Vinyl and fiber cement siding do not require paint because they are nonporous, durable surfaces that are resistant to rot. You can improve the appearance of this type of siding by applying paint. However, it will not prolong the life of the siding.

Wood Siding

• Wood siding requires a coat of primer and paint to help protect it from moisture. If you do not paint wood siding, you can expect some level of infestation and rot.

Aluminum Siding

• While aluminum siding is immune to rot, it can develop rust. Most aluminum siding is galvanized with a layer of zinc that makes it resistant to rust outbreaks. Over time, this coating can wear. A coat of etching primer and paint can help prevent premature wear and prolong the overall life of the siding.
