How to Clean Paper Pool Filters

Paper pool filters utilize a series of pleats to trap dirt, oils and debris as water flows through them. Over time, debris buildup causes the pool pump to work harder to push water through the filter. When the pressure gauge reading increases by 8 PSI (pounds per square inch) above the baseline, it's time to clean or replace the filter. Regular filter cleaners remove dirt and oils, while muriatic acid dissolves mineral buildup and kills algae. If you plan to use muriatic acid, always clean the filter with a regular cleaner first to avoid permanent damage.
  • Pool Filter Cleaning

    • 1

Turn off the pool filter's power. Remove the filter from its housing according to the owner's manual.

    • 2

Rinse the paper pool filter with a garden hose held at a 45-degree angle. Rinse the inside and outside of the paper pool filter, working from the top down until there's no debris left between the pleats.

    • 3

Spray the paper pool filter with filter cleaner until it's completely saturated, and allow it to soak for at least an hour or overnight.

    • 4

Rinse the paper pool filter thoroughly with a garden hose. If the filter needs further cleaning because of algae or mineral buildup, soak it in a muriatic acid solution.

    Muriatic Acid Soak

    • 1

Place the paper pool filter in a large plastic bucket. Carefully add 20 parts water and 1 part muriatic acid to the bucket. Allow the filter to soak in the acid solution until it stops bubbling.

    • 2

Remove the pool filter from the bucket and rinse it thoroughly with a garden hose.

    • 3

Place the paper pool filter back in its housing, and turn on the filter system.
