The 1970 Ford Boss 302 Mustang is a rare, powerful muscle car from Ford Motor Co. featuring significant upgrades over standard Mustang models. Only 7,013 units were produced, cars which now command tens of thousands of dollars at auction. The high-performance pony car was produced for the 1969 and 1970 model years. It proved such a well-known part of Ford's history that the company developed a new Boss 302 Mustang for release as a 2012 model.
Engine
-
Ford developed the Boss 302 Engine by combining the block from Ford's Windsor engine and the head from the marque's Cleveland engine. The Boss 302's engine displaces 302 cubic inches with a single four-barrel carburetor. Large intake and exhaust ports were needed to compensate for the increased cold airflow coming through the hood-mounted ram air system. The Mustang's hood prominently features a power dome highlighting this system. Bore and stroke is 4-by-3 inches, with a compression ratio of 10.6-to-1. The engine outputs 290 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 290 feet-pounds of torque at 4,300 rpm. These power figures allow a run from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and a quarter mile time of 14.93 seconds at 93.45 mph.
Drivetrain and Chassis
-
Like all Mustangs, the 1970 Boss 302 uses a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. A four-speed manual transmission with its Hurst shifter puts power to the road via a performance rear axle with a 3.91-to-1 final drive ratio. The front independent suspension uses upper wishbones and lower single control arms, with a central stabilizer bar. The solid rear axle uses a leaf spring setup. A limited-slip differential was available as a buyer option. The recirculating ball steering system has 3.6 turns lock-to-lock. Front power disc brakes pair with rear power drum brakes provide stopping power.
Exterior and Interior
-
Several exterior touches differentiated the Boss 302 from other 1970 Ford Mustangs. Most noticeable are the front splitter and rear spoiler, and the car's functional "shaker" hood intake scoop that rumbles as it feeds air into the engine. Dual exhaust, rear window louvers and special paint stripes with "Boss 302" lettering round out the package. The muscle car measures 187.4 inches long, 71.7 inches wide and 50.2 inches tall, riding on a 108-inch wheelbase. Front and rear track are equal at 59.5 inches. The car's curb weight is 3,415 lbs. Buyers had the option of either white or black interior. A wooden steering wheel, high back bucket seats and a tachometer were among interior options.
