Tools for Improving Communication

  • Listening Skills

    • Truly effective listening is harder than it sounds. This is because our brains are capable of absorbing 600 to 800 words per minute, but the average person speaks at a rate of 175 words per minute. It's all too easy to wander off mentally or start planning what you will say next. To fight this tendency, be willing to listen more than you speak, and do not interrupt even if you disagree with what's being said. When the other person pauses, rephrase what you believe they have just said to be sure you understand. In important conversations, taking notes can help you focus and choose which points need a response. You won't be tempted to interrupt "before I forget."

    Focus on Issues

    • Check all grudges, blame and biases at the door and separate the problem to be solved from the other people who are involved in it with you. Ask open-ended questions. Reframe the issue in neutral or positive terms: "It would be great to have a clean garage" as opposed to "This place is such a pigsty!" Be open to all ideas for resolving the issue at hand.

    Things to Avoid

    • Certain behaviors can be guaranteed communication-killers. Putdowns, interruptions, disrespectful body language such as eye rolling or finger pointing and using sweeping statements such as "you always..." or "you never..." are all likely to escalate tension and negative emotion, making a positive outcome much more difficult to achieve. Do not indulge in these mini-dramas and point them out in a respectful and non-judgmental way if someone is using such tactics on you. "I'll hear you out, and then I need to speak uninterrupted for two minutes" is far more effective than "You never let me finish!"

  • Good Gifts for Hospital Patients

  • Thick Blankets

    • The thin, rough standard-issue hospital blankets are lacking at best. A soft, thick quilt makes an outstanding gift for any hospital patient by providing cuddly comfort and lots of warmth. A hypoallergenic blanket is best, but these are sometimes expensive. Basic cotton quilts are also a good choice, especially those with a lively pattern or color scheme that brighten the patient's room. Avoid materials that might cause an allergic reaction from the patient or her roommate such as wool, feather, down or angora. Cotton allergies exist but are less frequent than other types of materials.

    Lotion

    • Between the stale hospital air and scratchy blankets, dry skin takes on a whole new meaning for a hospital patient. Body lotion is an equally appropriate gift for a man or a woman. She can't smooth lotion on her surgical site, but there's no reason the rest of her skin can't enjoy some moisture infusion. An unscented hypoallergenic lotion protects the skin against the dry recycled hospital air. Avoid dripping, spilling and staining by giving a lotion that is thick but not greasy.

    Netbook

    • A pre-loaded Netbook is the dream gift of a long-term hospital patient, allowing her access to entertainment and the Internet, often for less than $500. Internet access can help the patient feel connected, if only virtually, to friends, sports, the news and TV shows or movies. Many hospitals don't have reliable wireless coverage, so don't forget to buy an attachable wireless device along with the Netbook to enable reliable Internet access inside the hospital.

  • How to Help a Friend Stop Gambling

Gambling is something many people indulge in with no serious repercussions --- though some people disapprove of gambling on principle. Some people can have a flutter on the horses, or buy a lottery ticket, and then forget about it. For a person who becomes addicted gambling can take over her life, causing her to behave out of character and to jeopardize everything. There are biological theories that show that the feeling a gambler gets when gambling causes dopamine levels in the brain to change. Psychologically, gambling can be so all-consuming as to push all other worries and thoughts out of the gambler's mind. This state of mind can possibly be addictive in itself.
    • 1

Discuss the problem with your friend. It is important to choose the right moment. This might be when he broaches the subject. If he refers to his gambling, do not be too embarrassed to talk about it, and do not dismiss it. The fact that he raised the issue probably indicates that he has reached an important stage in admitting the problem to himself.

    • 2

Avoid sending mixed signals. If you discuss his problem with him, but then accompany him to the race track or the casino, you are giving him contradictory messages. Do not become impatient with him, or think that if you can control your gambling, he should be able to as well. Gambling is an addiction and by its nature it is not easy behavior to control. Be patient and take the problem seriously.

    • 3

Recommend that your friend visit the Gamblers' Anonymous website and answer the twenty questions that have been devised to identify problem gambling. Advise her to follow this up by attending a Gamblers' Anonymous meeting. If this sort of self-help organization is not for her, advise her to consult her physician and ask to be referred to a professional counselor who deals specifically with addictive behavior.

    • 4

Improve your own knowledge of the subject by reading about it or visiting the relevant websites. Help your friend to face any financial problems, if he is willing to discuss these. He might need professional debt counseling.

  • Gifts for a Mother's 60th Birthday

    • Mothers of any age are special, and 60 is a special milestone which should be celebrated with gifts to match American Images Inc/Photodisc/Getty Images

Mothers should never be taken for granted, and a 60th birthday is a particularly notable birthday for moms. Personalized presents celebrating your mother's life would be a thoughtful way of wishing your mother a happy 60th birthday. Though there will be a fair amount of work involved in creating a personalized present, if you involve other family members then it will make the process not only easier, but it will also be all the more enjoyable as you can share personal memories of your mother together. Try to evince happy memories rather than sad ones, when thinking of what type of present you have in mind.

    Photographs

    • Compile a collection of memories you have of your mother. Photographs can be put together in the way of a photo album, with not only old photographs, but with those photographs being enlarged. The photographs can involve family group photographs, wedding photographs, mother and children photographs, photographs of your mother as a young girl, and photographs of her with her own parents. The options are numerous, and can include photographs of family pets, and photographs of friends and other family members. Try and make sure that the selected photographs will be seen as a reminder of some happy times in her life.

    Sound and Film Memories

    • Audio and video/cine film recordings of your mother, and people who have been important in your mother's life is another way of creating a very personal present for your mother. Getting audio recordings onto a computer isn't difficult, and you could put them either on a CD or on a DVD - in the case of the latter together with the film recordings. You should be able to find places which can transfer your cine film to a DVD for you, and you can transfer video recordings to your computer with the appropriate cable. Filmed images of past pets could also be included.

    A Personalized Bouquet of Flowers

    • Make a bouquet of some of your mother's favorite flowers, and, if possible, and it is the right time of the year, select the flowers from your mother's own garden - as long as you know that she won't mind. Consult with anyone who knows about the intricacies of flower arranging to give you advice on putting the bouquet together, or find someone, preferably another family member, to assist you. Think also about flowers associated with specific events. For instance, flowers which your mother may have had in a bouquet when she was married. Or flowers your mother may have received on a special wedding anniversary.

  • What Traits Do Women Find Attractive?

    • Some traits increase the odds a woman will find a man attractive. B2M Productions/Brand X Pictures/Getty Images

It's difficult to find the answer to the eternal question, "What do women want?" Men try various methods to attract women, hoping to find the ideal mate or at least find someone who they want date. While women have their own individual ideas about what they look for in a man, there are certain traits that tend to be desirable across the board. If a man can manage to incorporate a few of these traits that women find attractive into his persona, his chances of success will be greatly improved.

    Physical Appearance

    • Whether a woman will admit it or not, looks do play a role in attraction. It's not a deal breaker, but a man who stays fit and healthy and is consistently well groomed will tend to have more chances with women. Of course, even a good-looking man will quickly be shot down if it's apparent he's a jerk upon opening his mouth. Likewise, an average-looking guy can win the heart of a woman if he has other endearing qualities.

According to "Primer" Magazine's website, a woman is turned off by a man who doesn't take personal grooming seriously. If a woman sees that a man doesn't take good care of himself, she assumes he would have a difficult time caring about anyone else. Good hygiene habits and physical fitness go a long way in presenting the right image at first sight.

    Confidence

    • Being cocky can be a turn off for many women, but a certain level of subtle self-confidence is a trait women are really attracted to, according to the Secret 2 Women website. A man who is comfortable in his own skin tends to enjoy himself more. This is infectious and tends to make others around him have a good time as well. Confident men are also fearless about embarrassment and are not afraid to show emotion when it's appropriate. An insecure man who can't make a decision on his own tends to be a single man.

    Intelligence

    • When it comes to a real relationship, women find intelligence attractive. This may not be important for those looking for one-night stands or only physical encounters, but in order for a woman to really connect with a man, he needs to show that he's got some brains.

Men who are intelligent tend to be more interesting and can have better conversations. However, a know-it-all type should not be mistaken for an intellectual.

    Sense of Humor

    • A good sense of humor is a must for many women. Most women find men who are humorous to be attractive because they put everyone around them at ease. Men who can laugh at themselves are also perceived to be able to handle stress easier and can deal with serious issues more effectively, according to the Secret 2 Women website.

    Work Ethic and Ambition

    • Women aren't usually interested in a man without a future plan. If a man lives at home with his parents and works a dead-end job or is unemployed with no ambition to better himself, he is not considered an ideal boyfriend. Women like to be with men who have a plan for their own lives, who are independent and who can take them out to have a good time.

A man doesn't have to be rich, but being broke because of laziness is certainly not a good way to impress a lady.

    DC Law About Marriage Counseling

Some states require couples to undergo premarital counseling. Ohio, for example, requires anyone under 18 to get counseling. The District of Columbia does not have a legal requirement for premarital counseling, but does have several laws that govern privacy in counseling sessions.
  • Marriage and Family Therapy Regulations

    • The DC Board of Marriage and Family Therapy dictates laws governing who may be licensed to become a marriage counselor or family therapist and regulates those therapists in the district.

    Confidentiality

    • The law generally protects therapist/client confidentiality, so that anything said inside a therapy session can remain private. There are exceptions to this law, though, as in cases where child abuse or violent behavior is evident or suspected. If the therapist suspects domestic violence may be occurring between the couple in a marriage counseling session, he must report his findings to appropriate authorities.

    Divorce

    • Information about attempts at marriage counseling may be required for divorce filings in DC to proceed.

  • How to Compare International Movers

Any residential move can be stressful, especially when it is an international move. When moving internationally, it may be a good idea to use a professional moving company to ease the stress.
  • Destinations

    • When choosing the international moving company, start by finding companies in your current country which also offer service to your destination country. Some companies ship from the United States to anywhere in the world, while others are simply based in a specific area.

    Shipping

    • It may be important to know how your possessions will be moved to your new home country. This will depend on the company and what they believe will work and suit your needs the best. Some of the shipping methods are via ground, air and sea.

    Pricing

    • Pricing will vary according to the specific needs of your move. Some of the factors affecting the price will be travel distance, shipping vehicles, amount of property to move, packaging services and additional insurance on your belongings. You can get a quote for your move by providing information about the specifics of your move.

  • How to Get Started With Geneaology

Tracing the history and lineage of your family can help unravel the unique origin and traditions of your family and can teach you a lot about yourself. In fact, certain quirks and mannerisms and medical history often can be traced back to an ancestor. Genealogical research is based to a large extent on recorded information pertaining to the birth, marriage and death of the members of a family. However, every family has its own stories, which can offer unique insight and information about its history.
    • 1

Bring together any and all records and documents and heirlooms of your immediate family. These include photographs and postcards, public records, land deeds, immigration records, baptismal certificates, school records and graduation certificates, medical records, family bible, wills, diaries and journals, and obituaries.

    • 2

Ask your relatives for similar records and ask them if you can make copies of them. Carry out an online search for any additional records of extended family members and relatives. You can do this at websites such as familytreesearcher.com, usgenweb.org or familysearch.org.

    • 3

Interview your family and relatives. Start by asking your parents and close relatives about names and dates and stories. Expand your search by moving on to other relatives.

    • 4

Go back to the place where your family resided earlier. Track down old friends, neighbors, fellow employees and the local priest or rabbi and ask them about your family.

    • 5

Join your local genealogy society or look online to gain access to old census reports. You can also enlist the help of seasoned genealogy professionals and enthusiasts to assist you further.

    • 6

Have DNA tests done to help direct you to forgotten ancestors and other family members both living and dead.

    • 7

Organize and write down all the information you have collected so far. You can do this with pencil and paper or with computer tools such as Microsoft Access, Excel or Word or their Apple or OpenOffice equivalents.

    • 8

Add new information to your records as soon as you gain access to it.

  • Online Divorce Mediation Training

Mediation is simply when two or more people in dispute use a neutral third party to help reach a mutual agreement. In divorce disputes, mediation has become a popular initial step in helping both parties reach their goals without litigation.
  • Becoming a Mediator

    • Diane Levin's website, MediationChannel.com, emphasizes that mediation training requirements vary from state to state, though most professional mediators have at least 40 hours of training in the field. Divorce mediation generally has the same guidelines and steps as any other mediation, though classes specifically in divorce mediation can be useful.

    Sources for Online Certification

    • The Ackerman Institute for the Family at Ackerman.org provides extensive online webinars in specific mediation techniques and topics, though they do not provide certification. Mediators Without Borders at Iadrglobal.org provides online classes and offers certification in mediation. Individuals interested in certification should check their state certification rules.

    Considerations

    • Remember that there are no current national standards for mediation in the United States. Check your individual state divorce mediation rules and guidelines to make sure that your online training and certification are enough. The Association for Conflict Resolution at Acrnet.org provides links and contact information for individual state laws.

  • How to Take the Best First Day of Kindergarten Pictures

Every parent wants to capture her child's milestone moments on film. Snapping pictures that tell the story of an event are cherished memories that can be shared for years. The first day of kindergarten is the moment many kids begin school and a lifetime of learning. A parent only gets one shot at taking the perfect pictures that capture this momentous day. A few tips will help you take the memorable photos that will last a lifetime.
    • 1

Choose multiple locations to take the photographs. Take some in the morning at home while getting ready, waiting for the bus, in front of the school and in the classroom.

    • 2

Take staged shots along with candid pictures. Candid pictures of your child getting ready, walking on to the school bus or putting their things away in his classroom without a posed smile will allow you to capture more meaning for the day.

    • 3

When aiming your camera, take pictures from different angles and perspectives. Aim your camera, so your subject is off-center or eye-level or shoot from below. Photos taken from different angles give the pictures movement.

    • 4

Play with your camera's functions and use the flash and natural lighting. After taking a picture if the picture comes out blurry or the color isn't right, try turning the flash off or on or change the settings on the camera to suit the location. The subject also can move if there is a light source around her creating a problem with the color quality.

    • 5

Take lots of pictures, especially candid shots like your child walking into the school, meeting his teacher, talking to a friend or putting their things away.

  • SMS Text Flirting Tips

  • Be Clear

    • Text messages have a word limit, which means that many people develop the habit of using abbreviations for text chat. It is essential, however, when flirting via text that you keep your messages clear and concise. The person receiving your texts may have no idea what all the different abbreviations mean, resulting in them not understanding what you are trying to say.

    Humor

    • When flirting via text, keep it fun and light-hearted. Humor is a great ice breaker for people who may not know each other all that well. Gentle teasing, jokes and even being suggestive can all work well as long as you keep it subtle. Avoid being negative, having a good old rant about friends or work will give the impression that you are hard to please. Avoid asking them to text back or questioning them on when you can meet. Getting too serious too quickly can make them think that you are clingy and possibly even desperate.

    Timing

    • The timing of your texts can be crucial, do not assume that the person is waiting around for you to text. Allow for them being at work, where they may not have access to their cell phone or may not be allowed to use it. Sending a text late at night is also best avoided, nobody likes being woken up. Use common sense and text when you believe they are most likely to be able to answer.

    Emoticons

    • When talking to a person face to face, you rely on their tone of voice, and facial expression to help you understand what they are saying. The use of emoticons in a text message can help get your meaning across. A smiley face after a joke or suggestive comment lets the person know that you are not being serious. While over-using emoticons is not recommended, they can help prevent misunderstandings and even embarrassment.

    Know When to Stop

    • If the person, you have sent a text message does not respond, do not send any more. If they are busy, they will text you back. If you keep on sending messages, you risk annoying the person, and this could result in them not answering at all. If they want to talk, they will reply when they are able to. If they do not want to talk, there is no sense embarrassing yourself by sending further messages. Flirting by text, as in reality, should be fun and not too serious.

  • Special Ways to Propose

  • Over the Intercom

    • When you and your partner are going shopping, make the trip more exciting with a wedding proposal via intercom. While your partner is searching the aisles, excuse yourself to set up the proposal with one of the managers. Then return to your partner and wait for the announcement to come on for everyone to hear. Be careful; this method may not work for everybody, especially those who are not sure their partners will say yes. Little hints that your significant other is anxious or even impatient for you to pop the question will improve the odds of this method's success. Also, make sure your partner would not prefer a more private proposal when continuing with this one.

    On a Scavenger Hunt

    • Leave notes that lead from one place to the next, perhaps places that have significant meaning in your relationship. This can be a tour all over the city or in a smaller place, such as a home. Keeping your partner moving and looking for more hints builds up the anticipation of the final moment. At the end of the hunt, be waiting for your partner with candles, flowers and a ring in hand.

    In a Movie Theater

    • Call your local theater to ask if you can fit in a proposal as one of the advertisements right before the movie begins; some movie theaters have ad spaces for sale before the show. If you want this to be a loud, public moment, choose a movie on its opening night. If you want a more private moment between you and your sweetheart, choose a smaller theater and a movie that will be closer to empty.

    In an Airplane

    • It could happen when you are about to take off, when you are in the air or when you have just landed. However, asking for your partner's hand in marriage over the intercom right after the plane has landed and everyone is excited to continue on to their destinations makes the final announcements from the crew much more significant. You will probably also end up with applause from the entire cabin.

  • What Are the Rules & Regulations for a State Licensed Day Care Center?

    • States set forth regulations to ensure day care centers foster child development. Stockbroker/Valueline/Getty Images

Children and their best interests are at the core of any day care program. Many employed parents choose to place their children in day care facilities while they are working. Sometimes day care centers are incorporated into a public school or an accredited non-public school system. Individual states license day care centers according to a predetermined set of rules and regulations. Although licensing regulations differ among states, common threads are typically found.

    Building Codes

    • The building and its surrounding areas must be safe and up to code. Fire, health and sanitation inspections are routine. Inspectors will look at many features, such as toilet facilities, water quality, ventilation, lighting and playground areas.

    Employees

    • Staff members must be qualified. There is generally a director who is responsible for the overall operation of the day care facility. Teachers are required to have associate or bachelor's degrees in some states. Adequate auxiliary staff, such as kitchen and clerical, must be in place. Staff members are subject to employee and criminal background checks. Many states require access to a nurse or doctor.

    Age Limitations

    • Depending on its designation, a day care center must adhere to age parameters when accepting children into the facility. Staff ratios are set according to ages of the children. Some centers can only take infants from 6 weeks to 18 months old. Toddlers are considered by most states to be 18 months to 3 years old. Preschool age begins at 3 years old. Many centers are set up for integrated ages, which requires even stricter guidelines for staff ratio.

    Discipline

    • Behavioral procedures must be established and cannot include corporal punishment of any kind. The staff must model respect and use positive means to guide students toward learning.

    Safety Drills

    • Safety drills must be conducted on a regular basis. Personnel must have a plan in place for safe evacuation. Fire drills and other safety drills are generally conducted and recorded at least once per month.

    Food

    • Meals typically include breakfast, snacks and dinner for students who are on site for an extended period of time. Clean facilities and nutritious meals are expected. The kitchen facilities are periodically inspected without notice.

    Curriculum

    • The adopted curriculum must reflect standards set by the state. The facility needs to meet the emotional, physical, social and intellectual needs of the students. Special needs students must be taken into account and provided for according to their individualized educational programs.

    Inspections

    • Day care centers must prepare for state inspections. Depending on their specific programs, centers could be licensed by the state's department of human services or by the state board of education. State employees evaluate the facilities to make sure they conform to standards. Impromptu inspections can always be expected.

  • How to Know When a Husband has Been Cheating

When you get suspicious that your husband may have participated in extramarital activity, you could begin to feel an overwhelming amount of anxiety. Avoid over thinking situations as this may drive you crazy. Rather, make clear observations about your husband's behavior before coming to a conclusion. Accusing your husband of cheating can cause damage in your relationship, so make sure you know for sure before communicating your concerns to him.
    • 1

Smell him. "Cosmopolitan" magazine states that if your husband starts smelling different, this could indicate he has been cheating. This may mean that he smells like the perfume of the woman he cheated with or he could start wearing a different cologne to impress someone.

    • 2

Observe your sex life. If your husband starts getting sex from another source besides you, this could show in your sex life. "Marie Claire" magazine states that guys can only have so much sex and if they get fulfilled elsewhere, they may not want to have sex as frequently with you anymore.

    • 3

Look at email. The Advanced Surveillance Group states that if your spouse starts deleting email addresses, this could indicate he does not want you to know about his communications with another woman. If you notice him acting secretive when on the Internet, you may have something to question.

    • 4

Follow him. If he suddenly begins disappearing a lot, this could indicate that he has been seeing someone else. When you get concerned about him visiting another woman, try to follow him in your car without him noticing. If he goes to a hotel or unrecognizable house, this may prove he has been involved with someone else.

    • 5

Talk to his friends. His friends may begin to act strange toward you if they know about an affair, according to "Marie Claire" magazine. They may act nervous when you talk to them because they do not want to give away his secret.

  • How to Get Divorce Records From Oregon

An individual may need a copy of his divorce certificate to provide proof of divorce for a legal purpose such as remarriage. Alternatively, a family historian may like to collect divorce records as part of a genealogy or family tree project. In Oregon, the Department of Human Services tracks all vital events in the state, including all marriages and divorces, through the Center for Health Statistics. The CHS, also known as Oregon Vital Records, allows members of the public to get divorce records. CHS limits access to certain interested parties and for specific purposes during the first 50 years after the divorce occurred.
    • 1

Confirm your eligibility to request a divorce certificate, as the CHS restricts who can get a copy within the first 50 years following the divorce---eligible requests can come from the ex-spouses and family members, their attorneys, other parties with personal or property rights, government agencies and parties engaging in other CHS-specified purposes. Submit a notarized letter with permission from an eligible requesting party if you do not qualify yourself.

    • 2

Pick a method for submitting your request, as CHS accepts orders by mail, telephone, fax, Internet and in person. Prepare a Divorce Record Request Form unless you have chosen to submit all necessary information over the Internet using the VitalChek online service. Proceed to the VitalChek website approved by Oregon Vital Records if you have chosen to order and pay online.

    • 3

Write the number of certified copies needed at the top of the Divorce Record Request Form. Complete the form with all requested information, including the full name of the husband and maiden name of the wife, date of the divorce, and name of the county granting the divorce. State your name, contact information and relationship to the ex-spouses. Explain the reason why you need a copy of the divorce certificate. Write your mailing address in the space at the bottom of the form where you can create your own mailing label.

    • 4

Submit the form to CHS using your selected method---if ordering divorce records by mail (see Resources), attach a check or money order made out to DHS/Vital Records for the total cost of your order, depending on the number of requested certified copies. Order by telephone at 971-673-1190 or fax your completed form to 503-234-8417. Provide your credit card information when requested to do so by the Vital Records office if ordering by telephone or fax.

  • The Best Friend Moving Gifts

    • Give a gift that is practical and sentimental. John Slater/Digital Vision/Getty Images

Having a friend move away is not a good feeling. You have shared so much together from first boyfriends to loss of family members. Maybe you want to send him off with a gift that is both practical and sentimental. Maybe you want to gift her with a present that she can use as well as something that she will always remember you by even when you are miles apart. If so, several options are available.

    Plant

    • A gift like this is practical. But it can be sentimental as well. Surprise her with her favorite flower to take on her journey. When she arrives at her destination, she can consider it her first housewarming present. If she is moving to a warmer climate like Florida, buy her a baby potted orange tree. She can plant the tree in her yard and be reminded of you whenever she looks at it. Attach a personal short note like, "This tree will grow and bloom over the years just like our beautiful friendship has." This is a personal gift that is practical and sentimental.

    Gift Certificates

    • Gift certificates are practical and can be purchased and used at the store of your choice. Perhaps your friend is moving and needs furniture. Present her with a gift certificate to any home store like Crate & Barrel, or Home Depot, someplace that will help her purchase what she needs to make her new space a comfortable home. If he is moving to a place in the Western United States, like California, give him a gift certificate to a major food chain restaurant. Most certificates can be purchased online and are presented in decorated envelopes. Attach a short note like, "You can take me to dinner when I come visit." It is a simple idea that is made personal.

    CD

    • cd-r image by matteo NATALE from Fotolia.com

If she has a long drive to her new home, she may need some tunes to listen to. Purchase a few of her favorite CDs. If you want to go the extra mile, make your own homemade CDs with her favorite traveling music. If she is into 80s pop music, download some Duran Duran and Adam Ant. If the 80s are not his thing and he prefers old-school punk like The Clash, make a compilation CD of their greatest hits. For a little fun, stick in a few of those disco tunes he hates. This way he will definitely remember you no matter where he is.

  • How to Find People Without Paying a Cent

Whether you're trying to find a high school sweetheart, an old friend or a coworker, today's technology makes it much easier to locate someone in a relatively short amount of time. Search engines and other free tools allow individuals to search for people using full names, locations or places of employment, among other information. There are plenty of tools available. The next time you remember someone from your past, consider looking him up, free of charge.
    • 1

Start by doing an obituary search. It sounds a bit extreme, but it's best to figure out whether or not the person you're searching for is alive before you set out on a wild goose chase. Check out local newspapers or do an obituary search online. The United States government's official web search is a handy tool and doesn't cost a dime. Type in "Death Record" followed by the state that you'd like to search.

    • 2

Complete a basic search engine search. Just type in the full name of the person you're searching for in a free search engine such as Google or Bing, followed by additional information such as previous location, birth date, hobbies and even the high school she attended. When you're searching for a common name such as "John Smith," it is important that you add extra details in order to narrow down the search.

    • 3

    How to Locate Birth Announcements

You may wish to locate a recent birth announcement as a celebratory record of your child's birth, or find an older announcement while tracing your family history. While newspapers commonly published birth announcements in the past, the "Iowa City Press-Citizen" warns that today's newspapers rarely publish them except on request. However, you may still be able to find birth announcements. For a recent birth, online newspapers and databases may place the announcement on the Internet. For a search further back in time, you may need to use print resources or archived primary documents through a library or genealogy service.
    • 1

Identify the local newspapers published in the town or city where the birth occurred, if you know the child's birthplace. Use the local newspaper's online search function, if available, to locate the birth announcement---for example, the "Hartford Courant" maintains an online service allowing individuals to input keywords such as the parents' names, child's name and family hometown. Contact the local newspaper for assistance with older articles, as the publication may keep print archives off the Internet.

    • 2

Consider an online genealogy search database if you do not have success with the local newspapers. Confirm that the database includes publications covering the geographic area around the child's birth location. Search with keywords, including the child's full name, location and birth year, whenever known, on a genealogy website such as Ancestry.com, which includes archived announcements from a number of nationally-known publications.

    • 3

Visit a public library serving the geographic area where you believe the birth occurred---this suggestion may be most helpful for older records and family history searches. Seek out archived newspapers covering the relevant time period and learn how each newspaper indexes information about names, places and events. Search for the parents' names, as many older birth announcements did not include the baby's name, according to the Salt Lake City Public Library. Ask for assistance with the library's microfilm machines, which allow you to scan archived newspaper articles stored on microfilm rolls.

  • Irish Graduation Gifts

    • Graduation gifts come in many different guises. DreamPictures/Digital Vision/Getty Images

Graduation as an event is matched only in terms of importance by christenings, weddings and funerals. Graduation from a university is something that marks the transition of an individual into their working life. Graduation gifts are an important was of congratulating somebody on having achieved a degree. People in Ireland do not celebrate finishing high school as 'graduation', but rather completion of a university degree.

    Champagne

    • The most obvious form of gift that can be given is one with the message of congratulation. This requires little planning, or a close knowledge of the person. Families in Ireland tend to be large, and it is traditional, therefore, for aunts and uncles to buy graduation presents for graduands whom they may not be personally close to. In this instance, a bottle of champagne would be appropriate, since this is a meaningful gift that can apply to both genders and ages. Alternatively, a bottle of wine can be a special gift, particularly if it is from a year meaningful to the graduand, such as the year of their birth. Whilst fortified wines, such as ports are viable options, these are less to everyone's tastes, so a more distant relative would be better advised to choose champagne or a bottle of wine. These can also be tailored to price range fairly easily.

    Plane Ticket

    • If the graduate is moving to a new city, or into a new house, then a good gift will be something to help them move in, akin to that of a newly-married couple. According to the "Irish Times" 65,000 people left Ireland in the period between January and April 2010. Therefore, a plane ticket to return for Christmas would be something of great value to a recent graduate.

    Suit

    • If the person graduating has a job that they are about to begin, then a gift relating to this would be much appreciated. One of the most expensive areas for a recent graduate is in purchasing suits and other work-related equipment. This can be tailored to the budget of the person giving the gift, which would be related to how close the giver was to the graduate.

    Rugby Tickets

    • The best gifts are those which are personal, because these are appreciated by the recipient. Many Irish people enjoy rugby as a past time, and yet rugby tickets can be too expensive for the average student to afford. Tickets to a rugby game, therefore, would be a way to reward them for having graduated.

  • How to Handle Controlling Parents

Having controlling parents can impact your emotional growth in a negative way. Children with controlling parents tend to doubt their choices. At times they will not defend themselves or they will allow others to abuse them. Children of controlling parents are at higher risk for anxiety, panic attacks and depression to name a few. Most parents who are controlling don't even realize that there is an issue. Parents believe that they have their children's best interest at heart. No parent wants to hear that their parenting style is harming the emotional growth of their child. Sadly, they may not change. There are some steps you can take to handle controlling parents.
    • 1

Discuss the situation with another adult whom you trust. Explain how your parents are making you feel about yourself. Sometimes it will take another adult confronting your parents for them to realize that they are too controlling when it comes to parenting. You are not responsible for their actions, they are.

    • 2

Remain calm when situations arise that would normally upset you. Face your parents eye to eye. Never look down or away. Listen and hear what your parents are saying. In return, ask them to listen to your view of things. While they may or may not hear you, you have taken a stand for yourself and your emotional well-being.

    • 3

Empathize and understand that some of the control tactics come out of fear for your safety and well-being. Respect your parent's home until you are able to leave on your own. While you may not be able to change things, you can remove yourself from the situation. Plan to attend a college out of state and work toward that goal. Setting goals for yourself will give you something to work toward in improving your situation.

    • 4

Be patient with controlling parents. Most times they think that they are in a power struggle with you. Demands are generally made to make them feel in control. Let them have it. Treat them with respect and kindness. You control the atmosphere of the conversation by defusing it.
