Cleaning It Up

Also take time to demagnetize the heads since you'll probably be spooling a lot of worn, old tapes through them.

Transferring to Digital

• Once you've finished the final mix on your four-track demo, you'll likely want to transfer it to a CD. An outboard component CD recorder is the best method for retaining sound quality. Simply run a line out from the Tascam four-track recorder to the line-in of your CD recorder and burn to disc. Then, pop the CD into your computer's CD drive, upload the tracks and start editing and remastering them with audio software. When shopping for a CD recorder, look for one that has coaxial digital inputs/outputs as well as optical.

Playback in Other Cassette Decks

• If you attempt to play back a tape recorded on your four-track machine on a regular cassette deck before it has been mixed, the tape will not play at the correct speed. This is because the deck records at double speed to increase audio fidelity. Also, if you listen to it on a regular cassette player before mixdown you'll only hear two of the four tracks; you'd have to flip the tape over to hear the other two, and they would be playing backwards. So be sure to do a mixdown of your demo tape first before attempting to play it on your home stereo or in the car.

  A very small aperture terminal, also known as VSAT, consists of components located on earth as part of satellite communications that carry voice and video signals as well as data, excluding broadband television. The earthbound system consists of a transceiver to communicate with the satellite and a device such as a PC to interface with the transceiver and any other user devices. The PC serves as a hub for the system.

Antenna

• The end users are connected via the hub. To communicate, any messages must be sent through the hub. The hub will retransmit the communication to the recipient through the antenna. Communication becomes more complicated when the VSAT is mobile. The antenna is generally mounted on the roof of the vehicle. The antenna must use additional components since it will automatically acquire a signal. A device known as a controller will alert the antenna of an incoming signal and activate a sequence to move it from the stowed position and aim it toward the sky. The controller will make small corrections in the position for best signal quality.

Internet and Intranet

• The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is necessary for terrestrial applications due to latency or the delay in signal due to the distance of the satellite. The TCP limits the amount of data in packets sent and waits for a signal that it has been received before continuing. If the acknowledgement of the receipt of the data is not sent, the TCP assumes that the packet of data was lost and resends it. The transmission of packets begins slowly and will increase as the TCP determines the speed at which the network can receive the packets.

TCP Acceleration

• To avoid the sender experiencing the delay from latency, the TCP sends immediate acknowledgement upon receiving the packet, even if there is a delay in forwarding the packet to the remote location. The satellite hub serves as the relay. By giving immediate acknowledgement of receipt, the sender can continue with more packets. To avoid duplications of acknowledgements for packets, the equipment at the satellite hub suppresses the acknowledgement from the remote site.

Limits of Protocols

• Most communications have been designed to work at optimum level on terrestrial applications. Terrestrial systems have a shorter latency and error rate than on satellites. This is particularly pronounced in the use off geostationary satellites. Efficiency is greatly reduced when assumptions in the system's algorithms are violated. Research is being conducted to overcome this deficiency.

  An engagement is a wonderful event to celebrate, and couples often send out announcements to inform their friends and family that they have decided to take the plunge. Sometimes the announcement will aso serve as a "save the date" notification if a couple has already decided when the wedding will be. The couple's unique style should shine through in the engagement announcements, and there are as many options for announcements as there are personalities to be reflected.

Traditional Engagement Announcements

• While there is no "right" way to announce your engagement, there are certain methods that are more common. A traditional way of sharing the news is by putting a small notification in the local newspaper, sometimes accompanied by a photo of the spouses-to-be. This method is a good way to ensure that everyone sees the good news, and you will not have to mail everyone their own announcement, although many couples opt to do both. Some couples prefer the more formal announcement, which can designed much like wedding invitations and mailed to everyone who will be invited to the wedding, often with an engagement picture slipped in as well. This method can be costly though, as the cards, envelopes, printing and customizing can really add up. For a similar, but more affordable method, take your favorite engagement photo to your local drug store and print your own announcements using the automatic photo machines. Sending these without envelopes, like postcards, can save money, too.

Custom Comic or Art Announcements

• If you and your fiance want to mail announcements to all your guests, but the formal wording and flowery decorations are not your style, look into doing something unusual and artsy with your announcement. Hire a graphic artist to make a comic strip portraying the story of how you met your fiance, or to create an artist's rendition of the two of you as superheroes. Local artists will often be glad to be commissioned to create a special visual piece for you to send as an engagement announcement, and the product will be uniquely yours. If you have any artistic talent, you might be able to do this one yourself.

Paperless and Tech-Savvy Announcements

• Between engagement announcements, save the date cards, invitations and thank-you notes, getting married seems to require that you cut down a small forest of trees. But there is a way around using all that paper and postage, and all you need is an email address. If you do not mind the informal announcement, sending a group email is fast, easy and cheap; you can even attach a digital photo. Some couples register at wedding websites such as OffbeatBride.com or MyWedding.com, which give you the opportunity to design and email your own engagement announcements and evites. However, if Great-Grandma Betsy does not have an email address, remember to send her a paper announcement instead.

  Topsail Beach makes up the southern and central regions of Topsail Island, North Carolina, a sought-after tourist destination for surfing and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. The island also features restaurants with fresh seafood fare, which are primarily caught in the Atlantic. Although Topsail Beach itself does not have any seafood restaurants, nearby North Topsail Beach and Surf City do. The high tourist season is during the summer, but most of Topsail Island's seafood eateries are open year-round.

Buddy's Crab House and Oyster Bar

• Buddy's Crab House in Surf City is less than 20 minutes from Topsail Beach and within walking distance of the Surf City Pier. This colorful restaurant features palm trees in front of the building, and the dining room has large open windows facing the ocean and Jimmy Buffet-related memorabilia. Seafood items at this restaurant include snow crab legs, shrimp basket, crab cakes and tuna. The restaurant's oyster bar offers oysters by the dozen or half-dozen. A full-service bar is available. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner every day of the week, and it is open year-round.

Quartermasters Restaurant and Tavern

• Situated in Surf City, Quartermasters Restaurant is within a mile of the bridge that leads to Topsail Island, less than 20 minutes from Topsail Beach. Menu entrees include baked shrimp and ravioli, seafood etouffee--which includes scallops, shrimp and crawfish--and stuffed flounder. The restaurant also provides "Half-Portion" specials, which includes coconut shrimp and fish 'n chips. The dining room has a casual atmosphere, and features a full-service bar with televisions for sporting events. Beach-related items, such as surfboards and artwork of palm trees hang on the dining room walls. Reservations are recommended for parties of six or more. Live acoustic music is provided during the summer. The restaurant is open all year-round.

Atlantis Restaurant

• Atlantis Restaurant, located in North Topsail Beach, is approximately 30 minutes northeast of Topsail Beach, and is on the seventh floor of the St. Regis Resort hotel building. This fine dining establishment has an elegant ambiance, and the dining room's ceiling to floor windows provide scenic views of Topsail Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the seafood entrees include apple wood shrimp--shrimp wrapped in bacon, shellfish pasta--a pasta dish with lobster, shrimp and scallops, and potato-crusted red snapper. The restaurant serves dinner every night of the week from March through November. During the winter, Atlantis is closed. Reservations are recommended.

A trustee is any individual or legal entity capable of holding title to the res of the trustee. A trust must have a trustee, but the absence of a trustee will not cause the trust to fail.   Plug the power supply into the DVDirect unit. Connect the AC adapter to the AC cord. Press the "Power" button (located n the top left corner on the front of the device) to turn the recorder on. The display will light up with "DVDirect."

  Insert a disc by pressing the "Eject" button (located on the far right corner on the top of the device). A DVD tray will slide out from the front panel of the recorder. Place a CD or DVD, recordable side down, into the tray. Do not touch the recordable side of the disc, and ensure the DVD is flush in the tray with no upturned edges. Press the "Eject" button once more to close the tray. The recorder will automatically begin to read the disc. The display will prompt you to select an input source from which the disc will record information ("DV Camcorder/S-Video/Video," "HDD/DVD Camcorder," or "Photo").

  Install a memory card into your device by determining which card slot to use. Three memory slots exist to accommodate a Memory Stick Duo, SD Card, xD-Picture Card, regular memory card, and CompactFlash card. The memory drive located on the far left of the right side of the device is the Memory Stick Duo slot. Insert a Memory Stick Duo, receptors first, until it clicks into place. The slot to the right of that (in the center) is the Memory Stick/SD Card/xD-Picture Card slot. Install a memory card into that slot until it clicks into place. To remove cards from either of these two slots, push the card from the back and pull it out. The slot located to the far right is the CompactFlash card slot. To insert the card, push it in. Pull it out to remove it. Follow the display prompts to begin recording.
