1977 Chevy Chevelle Specs

    • The year 1977 marked the last year that the Chevrolet Chevelle was in production. As of 1978, the Chevelle was renamed the Chevy Malibu. This transition was made easily because the Chevelle Malibu Classic had been produced for years prior. Originally produced 1964, the Chevelle had lost its popularity as an American muscle car. By 1977, the muscle car era had ended and the Chevelle was no longer the fast street machine that it used to be.

    Body Styling

    • The 1977 Chevelle came in three body styles: coupe, sedan and station wagon. New features for the third-generation Chevelle included a power moon roof and bucket seats that swiveled. One of the new features of the body was the colonnade hardtop that included frame-less glass on the doors.

    Engine and Transmission

    • In 1977, only three engines were offered for the Chevelle. The base engine was a 25-cubic-inch in-line six-cylinder engine with 90 to 110 horsepower and 180 to 195 foot-pounds of torque. A 305-cubic-inch V-8 was also available. It had 135 to 145 horsepower and 240 to 245 foot-pounds of torque. The optional V-8 was a four-barrel, 350-cubic-inch engine. This engine had 160 to 170 horsepower and 260 to 270 foot-pounds of torque and was the standard engine in the Malibu Classic station wagon. The '77 Chevelle was only offered with an automatic transmission.

    Dimensions

    • The coupe was 17.25 feet long. The sedan was two inches longer than the coupe and the station wagon was eight inches longer. The wheelbase for the coupe was 9.33 feet; for the sedan and station wagon it four inches longer. All body styles were 6.38 feet wide and 4.43 feet tall.
