The 1986 S-10 Specifications

• In 1982, the Chevrolet division of General Motors launched the first Chevy S-10 pickup truck model. It was to take up where the light utility vehicle, or LUV, left off. The S-10 was Chevy's answer to lightweight pickup trucks coming from some of the foreign car dealers. The result of the tweaking and streamlining of the LUV over the course of its life paid off for the newest member of the Chevy line. The Chevy S-10 pickup truck was marketed to truck owners who did not need the towing and payload capacities of a full-size truck but wanted the convenience of a pickup truck.

The Chevy S-10: The Body

• The 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup truck was a single cab, two-door, three-passenger, small pickup truck. It had a payload capacity of 1,000 to 1,500 pounds and no towing capacity. It had a lock in place, and a rear pull-down tail gate but no rear step. The 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup truck had front and rear bumpers, driver's side mirror with a passenger side mirror optional, rear window, clear glass and chrome trim. The truck had a 103-inch wheel base and a 12.5-foot turning radius, which was economical for a pickup truck. The front wheels were 17 inches, and the rear wheels were 18 inches.

The Chevy S-10: The Interior

• The 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup truck featured a single bench seat, AM/FM radio, dashboard lights, door pockets, driver and passenger lap belts and restraints, adjustable headrests, glove box, rearview mirror, power steering, cloth seat upholstery, steering wheel, ventilation and heating system.

The Chevy S-10: The Engine

• The 1984 Chevy S-10 pickup had a standard 2.5L Iron Duke four engine. A 2.5L, V6 electronic fuel injection system became standard beginning in 1986. The two-barrel carburetor rated at 92 horsepower. Iron Duke four was a marked improvement over the former 2L four. The expanded engine design gave the Chevy S-10 a little more power and strength during acceleration. The 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup featured two- and four-wheel drive, four- or six-cylinder, 2.5L engine, and manual five-speed or four-speed automatic transmission. It ran on regular, leaded gasoline. It got 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. According to 1986 fuel costs, the average yearly fuel cost was $722.

The Chevy S-10: The Price

• The base price for a 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup truck was $6,496. Options that included an upgraded radio, automatic transmission, air conditioning, premium chrome, rally stripe, performance wheels and tires, tinted windows, passenger side mirror, and dual exhaust add to the price of the truck.

  There are still 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup trucks on the road and for sale as of October 2010. Most of them have had an engine replacement and some interior work.
