5.3 Engine Specs

      The 5.3L engine is manufactured in many General Motors trucks and sports utility vehicles (SUV). The engine can be seen in GM models like the Yukon, Sierra and Terrain among many others. The engine model varies according to the model of the vehicle purchased but standard generation three 5.3L engine specs are listed. The third generation GM 5.3L engine began manufacturing in 1999.

    Engine Specs

    • The 5.3L V8 Vortec engine uses variable valve timing (VVT). The standard 5.3L engine is iron block with a 325 cubic inch engine and a horsepower output of 315, according to General Motors. The engine has a 3.78-inch bore and 3.622-inch stroke with a compression ratio of 9.5:1.

    Torque Specs

    • As of 2004, the standard Generation III 5.3L engine alternator cranks at 145 amps and also has a .040 in. spark plug gap. The engine is capable of 335 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine has a rod torque of 15 ft.-lb. plus 60 degrees or 15 ft.-lb plus 75 degrees and a main inner torque of 15 ft.-lb plus 80 degrees with side bolts with a torque of 18 ft.-lb., according to Engine Builders Association (AERA).

    Engine Fuel

    • The standard model 5.3L engine uses sequential fuel injection (SFI) flex-fuel with active fuel management; in other words, increased gas mileage and the capability of running on unleaded or up to 85 percent ethanol. Non-standard models offer consumers a valve control feature that allows drivers to utilize all the valves or half of them to increase fuel efficiency.
