Airlines That Fly Out of Detroit to Cancun

  • AirTran Airways

    • This airline's flight will take you from Detroit through Atlanta to Cancun. There isn't a nonstop flight between the two destinations. As with most airlines, AirTran is a culmination of many mergers. Airtran's mergers largely took place in the 1990s and included ValueJet. In 2010, AirTran reached an agreement to be acquired by Southwest Airlines.

    American Airlines

    • American Airlines does not have a nonstop flight from DTW to CUN. However, it offers a series of connecting flights to Cancun through Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Miami International (MIA) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). American Airlines has become a conglomeration of many airlines over the years. One of its earliest predecessors was the Robertson Aircraft Corporation, whose chief pilot in the 1920s was famed aviator Charles A. Lindbergh.

    Continental Airways

    • Continental's flight from Detroit to Cancun changes planes in Houston and Newark. This airline began in El Paso, Texas in 1934 by Walter Varney and Louis Mueller. Its first commercial flights were within the southwestern United States. In the 1970s, Continental's route grew significantly, eventually beginning its Global Alliance program where customers may reap the benefits of Continental's One Pass luxury program with other airlines throughout the world.

Continental Airways merged with United Airlines in October 2010 and will soon fly under the United logo.

    Delta Airlines

    • Delta Airlines doesn't have a nonstop flight between DTW and CUN. It chiefly stops through Atlanta, Washington D.C. or Chicago. With headquarters in Atlanta, Delta annually offers services to over 160 million people. It began in 1924 as a crop-dusting operation in Georgia, eventually carrying mail and passengers. The airline takes its name from the Mississippi Delta region that it began to serve in 1928. Merging with other companies, it has gradually become a billion dollar airline serving customers worldwide.

    Spirit Airlines

    • Spirit Airlines is a self-proclaimed "Ultra Low Cost Carrier," which offers flights in the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States. The airline began in 1980 as a limited charter tour operator in the U.S. It has expanded throughout the years to include both domestic and international flights. Spirit Airlines' nonstop flight from DTW to CUN is flight number 285.

    United Airlines

    • United Airlines and Continental Airways merged in October 2010. Customers can still make reservations at the separate companies for the next few months, however the two companies will soon fly under the United logo.

For a flight from DTW to CUN, United Airlines stops in either the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston or Chicago O'Hare. United claims that it hired the first airline hostess when it hired a registered nurse to aid passengers in 1930.

United shares its lineage with Continental Airlines in that they were both founded by aviator Walter Varney.

    US Airways

    • Flights from DTW to CUN on U.S. Airways might take you through Charlotte, Philadelphia, D.C.'s Reagan Airport, and/or Chicago O'Hare. U.S. Airways began in 1939 as a "flying post office," offering the first airmail service to many communities in Pennsylvania and Ohio. It began offering passenger services 10 years later. Since then, U.S. Airways has merged with various airlines and grown into an award-winning, commercial airline.
