Alcohol License Training

Although the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms issues distiller's permits, alcohol servers and retailers receive licensing at the state level after training. Laws vary with each state. License renewal requirements also vary state to state.

Alcohol Server Training

• Handled at the county, city or municipality level, licenses for selling and serving alcohol requires some training in serving alcoholic beverages, but varies by state. A state's alcohol control board may require completion of a short class, depending upon the state regulations.

Training

• Training provides the student advantages which include understanding how to avoid alcohol liability lawsuits, legally avoid alcohol penalties, how to recognize under-age customers, increase server professionalism and enhance customer service.

License Renewal

• Most states require recertification training in order to renew an alcohol license. California requires licensees to retrain every two years, according to California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Wisconsin also requires retraining every two years for servers, but no retraining for renewal of a retail or operator's license, according to Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

Liquor Liability Insurance

• Retail stores and restaurants selling alcoholic beverages are at risk for liquor liability claims. Many of these businesses use liquor liability insurance to reduce risk. Retail stores and restaurants employing trained and certified workers can save money on liquor liability premiums.
