Alternative Ways to Sweeten Baking Chocolate

    • Sweetening baking chocolate with something other than sugar can be a step in the right direction toward healthier eating habits. Alternatives can add a kick or a more interesting twist to your chocolate desserts, and they can broaden dessert options for your family members, friends and guests who have sugar-related dietary restrictions.

    Artificial Sweetener

    • Artificial sweeteners like Splenda and Stevia tend to be close to the natural taste of real sugar, and can be used in recipes that need sweet baking chocolate. Because they tend to be on the sweeter than regular sugar, use about half as much sweetener as you normally would. Add coffee to your recipe to offset the artificial or chemical taste that some artificial sweetners have.

    Condensed Milk

    • Though sweetened condensed milk has a high fat content and is not an option for diabetics because it has sugar, it can add a rich flavor and moist texture to your chocolate dessert, according to the Slash Food website. If your recipe calls for sweet chocolate, add about 2 tbsp. to each ounce of baking chocolate, and 1 tbsp. to each ounce for recipes with semi-sweet chocolate.

    Agave Nectar

    • Agave nectar is a a syrup-like liquid that is thinner and less sweet than honey. It is often used as an alternative sweetener in coffee or tea, and is used in vegan recipes because there are no animal products involved in its production. It's also a much healthier alternative to sugar because it has half the glycemic index of sugar. Because it dissolves quickly, and tends to be less thick and concentrated than most other types of syrups or sweeteners, you'll want to double the amount of agave nectar in your recipe when using it as a replacement for sugar.
