Eastern Tennessee, with its location in the heart of the mid south, provides an excellent growing environment for several different types of apples. Apple orchards throughout the region grow several different apples, and many of these apples have different uses as well. For instance, some apples are grown for making cider, and others are grown to be a healthy, delicious and nutritious snack.

    Freedom Apple

    • The Freedom Apple is an apple that is resistant to many of the major apple diseases. It is a small, red fruit, that is resistant to apple scab, powdery mildew and cedar apple rust. The Freedom Apple is grown at several u-pick apple farms in Tennessee, including Shade Tree Farm.

    Golden Delicious

    • The Golden Delicious apple grows well in East Tennessee as well. This apple usually is ripe when it becomes a light yellow color. At this stage, the apple has a very sweet flavor to it, making it a popular apple variety for pies, salads, apple sauce and even apple butter. Many bakers prefer to use Golden Delicious apples in their creations.

    Winesap

    • The Winesap apple is a great apple variety when it comes to creating apple cider. This small-to-medium-sized apple has a flavor that ranges from spicy to tart, and reminds some people of the flavor of red wine. It comes in a variety of colors, and can range from shades of red to even appearing violet. Several orchards in Tennessee grow this apple for cider making.
