The White River itself is part of the Connecticut River Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, a point of focus for the Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge and a tributary of the Connecticut River, which is an American Heritage River.

Everyday water usage from the White River watershed, including irrigation for farming and drinking water for residents livestock, can total up to 230,000 gallons per day. The waterways included in the watershed are also used as recreational areas for swimming, boating and fishing.
