Can Patio Chair Cushions Be Painted?

You can paint patio chair cushions as long as you understand an important point. Most paints are ill suited for fabrics, because they are unable to contract and expand along with soft surfaces. Choose the right paint and know the proper application process, or you will end up with flaking.
  • Paint

    • Acrylic fabric paint is appropriate for patio chair cushions for two reasons. First, it is formulated to remain durable in exterior conditions. Second, it possesses great elasticity that allows it to move along with soft fabrics.

    Absorption

    • Certain cushions may absorb paint poorly. You can combat this problem by diluting the paint prior to application. Stir in three ounces of water per each gallon of paint. This will enhance absorption and encourage a lasting finish.

    Application

    • You can use a roller or a paintbrush to apply the acrylic fabric paint to the cushions. If you choose a paintbrush, be sure to select one specifically formulated for use with water-based acrylics.
