Can Rocks Be Covered in Resin for Countertops?

Custom countertops can be created by covering rocks, recycled glass or porcelain with resin. With such a large range of materials used as imbediments, each composite countertop is unique.
  • Rock Imbediments

    • When using rocks for countertops, the material can either be whole pieces, shards or flecks covered with resin. Pieces must be small enough to fit in the mold. Rocks are placed in the casting mold, and then covered with a polyester resin. The resin can be clear or tinted to create a translucent or opaque finish.

    Rock Preparation

    • Before being embedded into a countertop, rocks must be washed and allowed to thoroughly dry. Porous rocks should be sealed first to prevent bubbles from gassing. Pieces that will float are glued in place before the resin is poured.

    Advantages of Composite Countertops

    • Countertops composed of rock and resin can be customized to fit the style and theme of the location where they will be installed. Depending on the cost of the rock used, these countertops are typically less expensive and easier to maintain than a stone slab or tile countertop.
