Locate the pulley diagram printed on the underside of the Malibu's engine hood. If you cannot locate the diagram, make your own. Denote which pulley and the side of the pulley that the serpentine belt rests against.
- 2
Locate the tensioner pulley next to the crankshaft pulley on the front of the engine. The pulley has a square-receiving hole in the middle of it.
- 3
Place the 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the square hole and lift up on the handle to relieve tension on the Malibu's serpentine belt.
- 4
Pull the belt off the tensioner pulley then lift the belt off the rest of the pulleys.
- 5
Place the new belt onto all of the pulleys except the Malibu's tensioner pulley. Use the diagram for reference.
- 6
Pull up on the ratchet handle and place the serpentine belt over the tensioner pulley.

Change Serpentine Belt on 2000 Malibu Engine
The serpentine belt on the 2000 Chevy Malibu runs every accessory on the engine including the alternator, AC compressor, crankshaft pulley, water pump and steering pump. This is a big job for one belt and when that belt wears out, you must replace it. If the belt breaks, every accessory on your engine stops running. This could cause engine overheating and could cause problems with your electrical system. All could cause thousands in engine damage.
