Cheap Relaxing Getaways

  • Go to the Beach

    • Many people think when you take a beach vacation you have to spend a lot of money. This is not always the case. Go during the off-season when hotel rooms are offered at reduced prices and many activities are cheaper, too. Rather than spending a lot of money eating out, stay in a hotel room with at least a microwave and mini refrigerator, though a full kitchen is ideal for a family. Make the most of your meals in your room, splurging only on a special lunch or dinner.

    The Great Outdoors

    • Whether you sleep in a tent, camper or cabin, your outside getaway will likely cost hundreds of dollars less than any hotel stay. Breathing the fresh air and experiencing life "unplugged" will relax and refresh you. Cook your meals over a portable camp stove or an open fire. Create your own entertainment, like hiking and biking during the day, charades and campfires in the evening. Bring a hammock to string between two trees and a good book. Take time each afternoon to enjoy quiet reading while swaying in the breeze.

    Family

    • Many families are spread out, living in different states and even different countries. If you enjoy your relatives and like to spend time with them, plan a trip to their home and stay with them. You'll save hundreds of dollars in lodging, so you can afford to take your hosts out for a nice meal or two. Help out around the house, making it easy to have you around, and don't expect your family to act as your tour guide. Go out and explore on your own while they're at work or resting. When you're planning your trip, be sure to talk about your expectations and how to make the vacation enjoyable for everyone.

    Friendly Rental

    • If you have friends or family members who own a vacation home ask if you can rent it for a few nights or week. You will likely get a good deal on it and will be able to save on eating out, too. Pack a good book or two and if you're driving, bring along sports equipment you can use during your vacation, like your tennis racket, golf clubs, diving gear and hiking boots. Leave the house in better condition than you found it, and send the owners a thank-you card. By being courteous guests, you may be invited to use it again.
