Christ in the Cradle Plant Care

Christ in the cradle (Rhoeo spathacea), formerly known as Tradescantia spathacea, is a succulent herb native to Central America, the West Indies and Mexico. Other names for the plant include Moses-in-the-cradle and oysterplant. Popular as a houseplant for its attractive foliage and small white flowers, Christ in the cradle also thrives outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9 through 11.

Soil

• Christ in the cradle requires well-drained soil. A mixture of 1 part peat moss, 2 parts loam and 2 parts sand or perlite creates the ideal growing medium for container plants. Outdoors, provide plants with garden soil rich in organic matter.

Light

• The plant grows best in partial shade outdoors or filtered, indirect sunlight indoors. However, it tolerates full sun or bright interior lighting.

Water

• Although Christ in the cradle can handle drought, it prefers regular watering and consistently moist soil. Water thoroughly about once a week, allowing the plant to dry slightly between applications.

Fertilizer

• During the spring and summer, Christ in the cradle appreciates monthly feeding with an all-purpose houseplant or garden fertilizer. Feeding should cease in fall and winter, when the plant is not growing actively.
