Club soda, seltzer water and soda water are all similar types of waters that have been mixed or infused with carbon dioxide. The gas gives each liquid its bubbly characteristics. Club soda usually contains added ingredients such as sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate, compounds that contribute a slightly salty flavor to the drink. Like other types of carbonated waters, club soda is a key ingredient in many popular cocktails.

    Scotch and Soda

    • Known as a guy's drink, a scotch and soda is simple to serve. Most bartenders fill a low 8 oz. glass with ice, pour in 2 to 3 oz. of scotch and top it off with soda water. The controversy with this classic cocktail stems from connoisseurs who feel that scotch made in exclusively in Scotland is perfect as is and should not be tainted with anything, including water, club soda or ice.

    The Collins Family

    • The traditional Tom Collins is a warm-weather drink that has been popular for more than a century. The basic recipe calls for 2 oz. of gin, 1 oz. of lemon juice, 1 tbsp. of finely granulated sugar and club soda. Variations of the Tom Collins substitute the gin for another spirit. A John Collins contains bourbon, a Jock Collins is made with scotch, a Ron Collins calls for rum and a vodka Collins is made with vodka.

    Mojito

    • The mojito is another classic cocktail that hails from Havana. The drink starts with 1 oz. of fresh lime juice, four or five mint leaves and a heaping tablespoon of finely granulated sugar on the bottom of a tall glass. Bartenders muddle, or squish, the ingredients so that the flavor is released from the mint. They then add ice, about 2 oz. of white rum and club soda.

    Campari and soda

    • Campari is an Italian aperitif, or a before-dinner drink, said to stimulate an appetite. Gaspare Campari concocted the alcohol-based brew of herbs, fruits, flowers and plants in 1860, and it is now one of the most popular drinks around the world. Campari is traditionally served over ice with club soda and a lime.

    Fizz Drinks

    • Some drinks that depend on carbonation to enhance their flavor are made with club soda, although lemon-lime sodas are being used more and more. The sloe gin fizz, made with about 2 oz. of sloe berry liqueur, 1 oz. of lemon juice, sugar and club soda is an old-time favorite. A Georgia peach fizz uses 2 oz. of brandy, 1 oz. of lemon juice, splashes of banana and peach liqueur, sugar and club soda. Bartenders mix about 2 oz of rum with lemon juice, sugar and club soda for a rum fizz.
