Compare the Nikon D40 and the D40X

Soon after Nikon released the D40 camera, it released a newer version: the D40X. It is thought that the D40X was released to compete with rival Canon's Rebel XTi. The D40X didn't last long before being discontinued but was quickly replaced with the almost identical D80. Some key differences between the D40 and D40X can help you make a decision if you're in the market for one.

Keep your budget in mind. The D40X costs about 33 percent more than the D40.

Compare the ISO sensitivity. The D40 is better in this category, coming in with ISO 200; the D40X's default is ISO 100.

Test the speed of the flash sync. The D40X falls short with 1/200; the D40's is 1/500.

Check the resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper the picture will be at a large size. The D40 has 6 megapixels (3,008 pixels), while the D40X has 10 megapixels (3,872 pixels).

Think about what you will be shooting. The D40X has a faster frame rate -- at 3 frames per second -- versus the D40's 2.5 frames per second. This is important if you will be taking action shots.
