While construction jobs are vital to the progress of our communities, they can also be dangerous positions for those doing the work. Construction workers often operate heavy machinery in adverse conditions and may be exposed to dangerous chemicals and electricity. Construction workers are paid well for their hard work, however, and by following prescribed safety standards, injuries can be kept to a minimum despite the hazardous conditions.
Weather
-
Construction workers work on projects that must be completed despite rain, wind, snow, blazing sun and freezing temperatures. All of these adverse weather conditions can take a toll, however, and often lead to common ailments like the cold or flu. Other times the weather can lead to more serious health threats like heat stroke or frostbite.
Noise
-
Many people complain about the noise associated with construction sites, but construction workers have to deal with that noise every day. Jackhammers, cranes, pavers and other heavy machinery emit very high decibel levels and years spent working around these machines can affect workers and lead to hearing loss.
Electricity
-
One of the greatest hazards on a job site is the danger that comes along with working so closely to electricity. Between 1992 and 2002, more than 1,500 construction workers died in electrical accidents, making it the industry's third-highest cause of death. Electrical accidents may also result in burns or shocks and typically involve power lines, live wiring or high voltage equipment.
Chemical Toxins
-
Chemical toxins are present on many job sites and may have long-term effects. Concrete and its dusts, along with lead overexposure, are common hazards on construction sites and lead to many of the industry's workplace-related illnesses. Asbestos is also a common concern when working around older buildings or homes.
Heights
-
Whether constructing a roof or securing support beams on a skyscraper, construction workers often have to perform their jobs at great heights. The threat of falling is always a very real concern for workers in these conditions.
