Cosmetology Law in Georgia

A cosmetologist is a professional educated in beauty, providing hairstyling, skin care, makeup, manicures, pedicures and waxing. If you want to become a cosmetologist in Georgia, it is important to understand the state laws.
  • Licensing

    • A prospective cosmetologist must obtain a certificate of registration. This is done by completing designated credit hours at a board-approved school or as an apprentice. You must also pass the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology exam. This license must be renewed every two years.

    Salon

    • To operate a place of business, you must have obtained a license and register your business with the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. All licenses must be displayed so customers can see them. A salon may hire unlicensed people to wash, shampoo, comb and brush hair. If your business is in your home, your license doesn't have to be displayed.

    Cleanliness

    • Each place of business must maintain a clean and sanitary environment. Each cosmetologist must wear protective clothing, shoes and when necessary, gloves. The salon must be free of all dust and the garbage must be disposed of daily. All articles used on customers must be disinfected after every use.
