Dash Removal on a 1990 Toyota Pickup

There comes a period in the ownership of any vehicle when things begin to go out--it could be a blown speaker, some heater or air conditioning component on the blink, or maybe it's time to upgrade the radio. For any one of a myriad of reasons, your 1990 Toyota pickup needs some work, and you'll need to pull the dash to accomplish your task.

Remove the 10 mm bolt in the lower left corner of the knee bolster on the driver's side. Remove the two Phillips screws on each side of the steering wheel. Remove the third Phillips screw on the lower right corner of the knee bolster. Gently pull the knee bolster away from the dash starting on the left side, then pull the knee bolster toward the left side of the vehicle to release the tabs connecting the knee bolster to the center portion of the dash. Disconnect the hood release cable from the metal stop behind the knee bolster and remove the cable from the handle.

Remove the 10 mm bolt from the rightmost corner of the dash, below the glove box door. Remove the Phillips screw on the lower left corner of the glove box door. Open the glove box and remove the three Phillips screws at the top of the glove box door opening. Pull the glove box assembly away from the rest of the dash. If your truck is equipped with a glove box light, unplug the harness.

Remove the Phillips screw at the top right corner of the center dash bezel. Remove the four A/C slider knobs. Pull out the cupholder and pull outward on the top of the bezel that surrounds the A/C sliders. Using equal force on each side, pull the center portion of the dash outward and away from the framework of the dash. Unplug the cigarette lighter. It may be necessary to move the shifter back to allow removal of the center dash bezel.
