Typically data cables are used to wire a local area computer network. However, data cables may also be used to connect peripherals to a computer. If you plan to work with data cables, there are a number of tools that will make the job easier. Higher quality tools will allow you to test a wider array of cabling types.
Wire Strippers
-
If you plan to wire your own data cables, it will be necessary to trim and strip the wires. Wire strippers will allow you to strip off the insulation on a data cable and trim the end of the wire. Data cables may contain either stranded or solid core wire and a different stripper is typically used for each type.
Crimper
-
A crimper is designed to connect plugs to the ends of a data cable. The best crimping tools are designed to allow you to swap out dies according to the type of connection that you plan to crimp on the end of the cable.
Drill Bit
-
If you plan to run your data cable through any ceilings or walls, you may need a drill bit as long as 12 inches.
Data Cable Tester
-
A data cable tester is designed to test for shorts, open wires, faulty wires or reversed and split pairs. The most important consideration is the type of cable that you plan to test. Cheaper units will only test a limited set of cable types, while higher-end tools will allow a much wider range of data cable configurations.
