While it is nice for truck shoppers to have several options when they're in the market for a new vehicle, the sheer number of body styles and trim styles can be confusing. The Toyota Tacoma is no exception, with two styles that differ greatly despite having similar names. The Toyota X Runner and PreRunner are two distinct trim styles with some big differences.
Trim Style
-
The most noticeable difference between the Toyota Tacoma PreRunner and X Runner is the overall trim style. The PreRunner is a two-wheel drive vehicle that sits high off the ground so that it looks similar to a four-wheel drive truck. The X Runner's trim style is drastically different and is designed with street- and race-driving in mind. According to Car Gurus, the X Runner is designed to be a street-racing truck, complete with X-braced frame, lowered body, sport tuned suspension and wider tires.
Handling
-
While the X Runner still basically functions as a truck, according to Edmunds, the handling has been modified to provide noticeably better street performance without sacrificing the features of a truck. The X Runner comes standard with gas-filled Bilstein shock absorbers. Bilstein Shocks are used not only in trucks but also in SUVs and full-sized sedans. The shocks are made to simultaneously improve handling and ride comfort by maximizing shock absorption on side loads of vehicles.
Features
-
There are several more variations of the PreRunner than the X Runner. While the PreRunner is available as an access or double cab in both four-cylinder and V6 variations, the X Runner is only available as an access cab model utilizing a V6 engine and six-speed manual transmission. The X Runner also has some other exclusive features, such as 18-inch alloy wheels, wheel-well flares and a full body skirt kit for improved, sporty looks. The X Runner is only available as a rear-wheel drive truck and lives up to its sporty feel by reaching 60 miles per hour in under seven seconds.
