Directions for an Easy Ripple Knit

Ripple knit is an easy pattern for a beginning knitter to experiment with. It combines just knit and purl stitches to form a wave pattern in the finished fabric. Once you master the pattern, you can make washcloths, scarves or even a blanket by adding more stitches and repeating the pattern along each row.

To Start

• Cast on 28 stitches. This pattern has a 12 stitch repeat. These directions will knit two ripples per line with a two stitch border on each edge.

The Pattern

• Row 1: K2 *P4, K5, P3* K2 last 2 stitches

  Row 2: K2 *K2, P2, K3, P2, K3* K2 last 2 stitches

  Row 3: *P2, K2, P5, K2, P1* K2 last 2 stitches

  Row 4: *P2, K7, P3* K2 last 2 stitches

  * * in knitting means repeat the pattern between asterisks.

Finishing

• Cast off. Cut the yarn. Weave in the end. You can make the knit fabric wider by adding 12 stitches per row. For every 12 stitches you add, you will knit another ripple along the row. You can make your fabric longer by repeating rows 1 through 4 of the pattern.
