Does Turbinado Sugar Raise the Insulin Level?

Turbinado sugar, often known as raw sugar, is a coarse sugar made from sugar cane juice that is evaporated, then crystallized. It has a slightly stronger molasses taste and larger crystals than regular granulated sugar.
  • Turbinado Sugar and Insulin

    • Turbinado sugar causes the same effects in the body as regular refined granulated sugar. After you consume sugar of any type, the pancreas releases insulin to help the body metabolize the excess sugar.

    Benefits of Turbinado Sugar

    • Since turbinado sugar is less refined than regular sugar, it has more vitamins and minerals. The amounts of these nutrients are very small, but some experts believe that these still offer slight health benefits.

    Bottom Line

    • Turbinado sugar is essentially the same nutritionally as regular sugar. If you have diabetes or need to restrict your sugar intake, you will also need to restrict the amount of turbinado sugar you consume.
