Engine Specifications for a 1987 Ford Tempo LX 2.3L

    • The 1987 Ford Tempo LX was conceived as the luxury model of the Ford Tempo line. The vehicle's 2.3-liter engine incorporated a number of improvements derived from Ford's Programmed Combustion, or PROCO, project, which gave the engine increased performance and cleaner operation. The engine was modified the very next year, in 1988, according to the Ford Tempo Car Club of America.

    Standard Engine Components

    • The 2.3-liter LX engine was an inline four-cylinder with 144 cubic inches of combustion chamber displacement. It featured a cast-iron block and head. The valve train for the 1987 Tempo's 2.3-liter engine used hydraulic valve lifters, pushrods and individual rocker arms. According to the Ford Tempo Car Club of America, the valve train for this engine was the same as those used in some larger Ford V8 engines.

    High Specific Output

    • The Ford Tempo LX engine featured "high specific output," or HSO, technology. Improved cylinder heads, enlarged combustion chamber and less valve shrouding were incorporated into the engine as part of HSO technology. A higher lift and a camshaft with longer duration was also incorporated. The 2.3-liter's engine design allowed air to enter and exit the engine more quickly, which resulted in a 20 percent bump in horsepower along with an increase in torque.

    Performance Ratings

    • The 2.3-liter LX engine had a horsepower rating of 100 at 4,600 revs per minute. The torque rating was 125 foot-pounds at 3,200 rpm. The compression ratio of fuel entering the engine measured 9.0:1. Bore and stroke measured 3.68 inches by 3.30 inches. Lift intake and exhaust for the engine's camshaft both measured 0.262 inches.
