Federal Contractor Training

Under the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), a federal contractor is someone who is awarded a government contract or who conducts business with the government as an agent. Training can be necessary to comply with the wide range of rules that can come with the contract.
  • Significance

    • Federal contractors are required to apply higher standards to business procedures than other U.S. companies. Rules are complex and cover various areas including the contractor's code of ethics content, accounting systems, employment policies, business relations, political associations and whistle-blowing. Contractor training is not mandatory but is advisable to ensure fulfillment of all requirements.

    Features

    • The Federal Contractor Service Network and several legal offices offer federal contractor training, mainly focusing on accounting procedures and the Federal Acquisition Regulation. The most comprehensive course is offered by the University of Nebraska in co-operation with the Defense Acquisition University. Their online based federal contractor certification program includes training in federal acquisition regulations, quality requirements, ethics, marketing, contract types, source selection procedures and employment structures. Successful participants will be issued with certification.

    Time Frame

    • Course length varies depending on scope and chosen subject, starting from three hours up to workshops lasting several days. Prices are between $425 for a three hour course to $2,500 (as of 2010) for workshop participation.
