Architectural Details

Understand that a fireplace mantel may be as simple as a thin shelf or niche, or a heavyweight built-in piece. Either way, you can extend the dramatic impact of your fireplace mantel by adding architectural elements. Make the eye travel upward and outward by adding a lightweight wooden or plaster relief arch over the mantel, painted to match the color or finish of the mantel. Replace plain Jane mantel supports with pieces that are more architecturally interesting, such as sconces or scrolled wrought iron handles. Frame the mantel in small-scale columns or, for a lighter touch, bead board trim up and down the wall.
Color
-
Set the stage for an eye-catching mantel tableaux by using color. A stark white mantel adds a crisp clean note, but you can also try a trendy new neutral, such as gray, with blue-based undertones for a cool look and rose-based undertones for a warmer vibe. Antique white and muted earth tones on a fireplace add a country cottage element. Go a bit bolder with a designer shade of poppy orange, saffron or muted green. Stencils, faux finishes, wallpaper or hand-painted trim add texture and dimension, but can drown out more subtle accessories.
Art and Accessories
-
Choose pieces that spark conversations and have a story, and you will have the beginning of a well-decorated mantel. Family photographs, favorite art pieces, travel souvenirs, ethnic crafts and heirlooms can take center stage, either standing on the mantel or placed on a miniature pedestal or tabletop easel. Avoid centering every object and try for lopsided groupings, such as three pieces on one side of the mantel and one larger object on the opposite corner. You can have some fun with your mantel tableaux and stage visual surprises, like a line of cobalt blue bottles punctuated with a piece of red coral. Group pieces by material, place of origin, color or theme, but vary their heights, widths and overall size to maintain the design integrity of each object. Wall sconces or mirrors above the mantel can further emphasize your decor.
