Ford F250 Brake Drum Shoe Installation

A key safety component of the Ford F250 is the braking system. Over the course of time, brakes wear down and need to be replaced. Like many vehicles, the rear brakes on an F250 are drum brakes. This is a type of braking system in which the brakes are on the inside of a drum that is located on the wheel hub. When engaged, the brake pads press out against the inside of the drum, slowing the truck. Replacing the brake shoes and pads is a repair that can be completed at home with the correct tools and knowledge.

  Clean the wheel with brake wash. Avoid coming into direct contact with the dust and brake wash, and wear gloves and safety goggles when cleaning the wheel, as the brake dust may contain asbestos.

  Lubricate the spots on the wheel where the brake shoes come into contact with non-drying silicone brake lubricant.

  Put the new brake shoes onto the wheel hub.

  Attach the spring-loaded retainers to the wheel to keep the brake shoes in place, while you install the adjuster arm.

  Install the adjuster-arm spring, adjuster cable and brake-shoe springs.

  Attach the adjuster cable to the adjuster arm.

  Place the brake drum onto the wheel hub.

  Put the tire on the wheel hub, and secure it, by attaching the lug nuts to the bolts.
