Frequency Generator Projects

Frequency generator projects can be simple enough for a middle school science fair project or complicated enough for a master's thesis in electrical engineering. A simple frequency generator can be made with a few components that can be picked up at any hardware store or electronics store. There are several sites on the Internet that provide step-by-step instructions for making a generator, as well as sites of schematics that allow the do-it-yourself folks a chance to shine.

    Simple Frequency Generator Project

    • Ryan McGinty (see References) presents a very simple frequency generator project that can be enjoyed by learners of all ages although younger learners should be supervised by adult when working with electricity. The site features step-by-step instructions with photographic representations of each step. Photographs of the electrical components used in the project make it easy to shop for supplies even if you have no previous experience with circuits. Once the basic concepts have been mastered, this project can be expanded to suit the curiosity of the learner.

    Variable-Pitch Frequency Generator Project

    • Bombshock (see References) features a project that demonstrates the production of a variable pitch frequency generator. The project is quite simple and suitable for a high school science project. Younger students can undertake it with adult supervision. The project includes very few components and provides a schematic, making it ideal for visual learners. It teaches students to think for themselves while limiting the chances of failure. It is also fun and can be expanded.

    Audio Frequency Generator Schematic

    • For people who have experience with circuitry and schematics, Circuit Nab (see References) has a schematic that displays a simple frequency generator. Advanced students can customize the schematic on the Circuit Nab website and build their own custom audio frequency generators. The components in the sample schematic are limited to the vary basics. Thus, new additions to the circuit are not likely to result in unexpected consequences.
