A simple frequency generator can be made with a few components that can be picked up at any hardware store or electronics store. There are several sites on the Internet that provide step-by-step instructions for making a generator, as well as sites of schematics that allow the do-it-yourself folks a chance to shine.

• Ryan McGinty (see References) presents a very simple frequency generator project that can be enjoyed by learners of all ages although younger learners should be supervised by adult when working with electricity. The site features step-by-step instructions with photographic representations of each step. Photographs of the electrical components used in the project make it easy to shop for supplies even if you have no previous experience with circuits. Once the basic concepts have been mastered, this project can be expanded to suit the curiosity of the learner.
