Fruits & Vegetables to Plant in September

If you live in the southern portion of the United States, you may have to suffer through hot summers, but you also enjoy the benefits of a second planting season in the warm autumn. However, if you live in the north, you can also plant these vegetables in your greenhouse.
  • Carrots

    • Carrots tolerate some frost and can thrive if you plant them in September. They take about two months to 80 days to mature, ready to harvest just in time for winter.

    Radishes

    • Radishes, on the other hand, grow quite quickly. Radish seeds enjoy soil that is cool and moist and are ready to harvest about six weeks after you plant them. If you are a radish fan, you can continue planting them up until about three weeks before the first frost.

    Lettuce

    • Like the radish, the lettuce is a vegetable that likes to grow in cool weather. While it is a crop that is typically grown in early spring, the cooling temperatures in September make it a good late-harvest crop. Once you plant lettuce, it is ready to harvest in about 50 days.
