Fuel Assistance Guidelines for the Elderly in New Hampshire

The elderly are among the most vulnerable population groups in our society. Many New Hampshire elderly find themselves in need of fuel assistance to pay for heating bills. Fortunately, several programs are available but eligibility is based on certain guidelines.

Heating Assistance Program

• The Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps the elderly with heating bills in the winter months. Eligibility is based on income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. In 2010, the limit was $1,780 per month for one person. If funds are available as the HEAP program-year goes on, eligibility guidelines increase to 60 percent of the median income level for New Hampshire.

Senior Energy Assistance

• The Senior Energy Assistance Program is available to elderly residents who are aged 60 or older and ineligible for LIHEAP assistance. As of 2010, the maximum benefit amount is $270.

FEMA Help

• Elderly who are not eligible for any type of fuel assistance from the state of New Hampshire, might get assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). However, this benefit is, "...restricted to one month's cost, one time during the program period," according to South New Hampshire Services.

Neighbor Helping Neighbor

• The Neighbor Helping Neighbor Program is another option. To qualify for the program, applicants must not be eligible for fuel assistance from the state and must be facing disconnection.
