Whether for a school group, church group or group of friends getting together, outdoor activities that engage everyone are a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening. If you have time to plan ahead and gather materials, a digital scavenger hunt gets everyone on the move. On a warm day, water olympics helps cool everyone down. In the evening, the classic game capture the flag can be played over and over again without getting boring.
Digital Scavenger Hunt
-
Use digital cameras and phone cameras to take pictures during a digital camera activity. Begin by putting together a list of items each team must take their picture with or activities each team must be photographed doing. Assign points to each item depending on how tough it might be to complete. Break the young adults into teams of three or four, with one driver per team. Send the teams out with the list and a time limit. Two hours is a good guideline. If the driver is an adult driver and not officially part of the scavenger team, make a rule that the driver can't help in any way and must take direction from the team. When the time limit is up, collect the cameras and upload the pictures into a slideshow. Each team can keep track of points for the other teams as they watch the slideshow. Give a prize to the winning team.
Water Olympics
-
When it's sunny and warm, have everyone put on their swimsuits and participate in the water olympics. Set up five or more activity stations for everyone to complete. Some must be done at the same time, while others can be rotated through. Have a water balloon toss, where teams of two begin just inches apart and toss a filled water balloon. After each toss, each person on the left takes one step back. The teams continue tossing until only one team is left with their balloon intact. For a slide challenge, set up a slip and slide and have everyone take a turn. Measure to see whose slide is the farthest. Team games like volleyball and basketball can be played if there's a pool available. Provide bubble solution and wands to see who can blow the biggest bubble. Play guerrilla-style tag with water guns until only one person remains. Provide ribbons for the winners of each event.
Capture the Flag
-
Wait until nightfall to play this classic field game. Divide the young adults into two teams. Assign each team one half of a large field or property. If the game is played at a house, one team can have the front yard while the other takes the backyard. Give each team a flag. The flag can be any type of cloth about 12 inches square, but they should be different colors. The teams each get five minutes of secrecy to hide their flag on their side of the field. When the time's up, team members must infiltrate the opposite end of the field to find and steal the opposing team's flag. If someone is tagged by the opposite team, they go to a "jail" near the center of the field and can't come out unless someone from their own team tags them again. The first team to locate, capture and return the enemy's flag to their own base without being tagged wins.
