Gateway Compatible Power Cords

  • Type B Cords

    • Type B cords have B category plugs, suitable for the United States and Canada. This electric plug supports rated 110V, 60Hz voltage with ground pins. The pins are flat and appear rectangular. Female outlet sockets usually have a clamping mechanism to hold the plug firmly. Type B cords are generally used on large appliances such as stoves or stereos.

    Type C Cords

    • Type C cords are preferred for Gateway netbooks. They do not have ground pins. Used in the UK region at 240V, 50Hz AC, the pins are round and insulated halfway. Type C cords are popular for low power appliances and can even fit in modified B sockets.

    ICE Connectors

    • Most Gateway compatible power cords have ICE Connectors, set to the specifications of the International Electrotechnical Commission. Typically C5 and C7 type of connectors are used. For an adapter with a C6 inlet, C5 should be used. For laptops and desktops, C5 is preferred. Similarly for a C8 inlet, C7 should be used. The difference in C5 and C7 is that C5 has a ground pin. For notebooks and portable devices, C7 is preferred. The number of pins often is referred to as barrels.

    Type I Cords

    • Most of the Gateway adapters have universal voltage and frequency range. Still, you should verify it before connecting to 230 or 240 V AC outlets. It is printed on the label. Having a traveler's pin converter is a smart choice to ensure you can power your computer. Some converters also are equipped with surge protectors.
