Germs & Housecleaning 101

No matter what room or surface in a house, there will be germs. Some germs are just disgusting, while others can cause infections and serious illness. Cleaning and good general hygiene are essential in the fight to stop germs spreading around a home.
  • The Facts

    • Germs are microscopic organisms that live and multiply in and on places such as water, animals, air and even humans. Exposure to germs is not always a bad thing because this can help improve a person's immune system. Certain germs, however, can cause vomiting, diarrhea and even serious illness.

    Misconceptions

    • A common misconception seems to be the belief that cleaning and disinfecting are the same thing. While they may seem similar, the outcome is decidedly different. Cleaning surfaces with ordinary soap and water will remove germs. Disinfecting regularly kills germs and prevents them from returning.

    Solution

    • Germs are most commonly transferred by physical contact. Hand washing after eating and going to the bathroom is vital in preventing germs from spreading. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a disinfectant daily to wipe down kitchen and bathroom surfaces as well as children's toys.
