San Augustine is the county seat of San Augustine County and in the far eastern part of Texas, not far from the Louisiana state line. The grasses found in this area are generally of the warm-weather variety that can withstand a lot of heat and sun. They also require at least some water, as opposed to the grasses that thrive in the more arid areas in the western part of the state.

    St. Augustine

    • St. Augustine grass is found in much of the southeastern part of the county, including East Texas. It makes for an attractive lawn with a deep green color, and has coarse and wide-bladed leaves. It a warm-season grass that does not do well in colder conditions. It is often planted from seed, although it also does well when planted as sod. St. Augustine grass produces a dense turf and can tolerate shade. It does not do well in drought conditions, so watering may be required. It can tolerate high heat in the summer.

    Carpet Grass

    • Carpet grass is a warm-season grass often found inland in the states along the Gulf of Mexico. It is a perennial grass that spreads and thrives in poor and wet soils. It has a coarse blade that makes for a dense turf. It does not do well in drought conditions because its shallow roots are not good at drawing water from the ground. It can handle both hot and cold conditions. Carpet grass can be grown from seed or sprigs. It is also good for erosion control and does not require a lot of maintenance. It prefers full sun and can withstand a lot of foot traffic.

    Centipede Grass

    • Centipede grass does not grow quickly, but in time will overtake other grasses in the area. It has a medium texture, and produces a dense and attractive lawn that is generally free of weeds. It prefers full sun and is not as shade tolerant as some of the other warm-weather grasses. Centipede grass requires little care, including fertilizer and mowing, and is usually resistant to disease and most kinds of insects. It can established from either sprigs or seeds. It is commonly found in the North Texas and the Texas Panhandle. Centipede grass will also adapt to soils that do not have a lot of fertility.
