Guide to Refinishing a Cement Patio

If you are planning to refinish your concrete patio, use the proper preparation procedures or shedding will ensue. Once you've readied the surface for its new finish, apply a durable coating formulated to withstand harsh weather elements and consistent duress.
  • Cleaning

    • New finishes will not adhere to dirty concrete (cement powder mixed with water and sand or gravel). Use a pressure washer to clean the patio. Once the concrete is clean and dry, it will be better suited for its new finish.

    Etching

    • Horizontal concrete surfaces will not accept new finishes unless they are etched. Apply a muriatic acid etching solution before you apply your new finish, or peeling and flaking will result.

    Finishing

    • Exterior concrete patios require a durable finish that will hold up to moisture and duress. Use a two-part epoxy coating for this type of project or an acrylic porch paint. Apply the epoxy or porch paint using a roller equipped with a shed-free cover. Attach an extension pole to the roller to ease the application process. Wait six hours before walking on the finished patio.
